Ive decided to post this as it is the exact post I was looking for before buying a new milk jug.
I was summing up between a motta($50-$70) and an alessi($150-$200). I bought a 500ml motta and after a while decided to buy a 1lt alessi.
Both jugs are much heavier than what you might expect from a jug of the same size. This means that the steel is thicker, which is great, but also means your going to have to get used to the temperature (if you use a thermometer, you should be alright). In these jugs the milk feels about 5degrees cooler.
In respects to latte art....Its hard to say. The motta is better for doing more intricate designs(thin rosettas, tulips, double +triple rosetta), but this probably has more to with the size rather than the shape of the jug. Id be interested in trying a smaller alessi. The alessi can pour lovely rosettas, the leaves are larger and fatter; but its harder to pour intricate patterns.
I use the alessi to steam my milk mainly due to the size over the motta, but there is something special about the microfoam you get from the alessi. Once I worked out how to steam effectively in the alessi (and it will take you a while to get used to it), the microfoam was probably 1.5 times as good as foam from a standard jug.
In conclusion, the alessi is weighted better than the motta(the motta is somewhat is bottom heavy) and the alessi is made from much nicer feeling material. I love using the alessi at work and so I get pretty good use out of it. For any beginner I would recommend sticking with their pitcher and work on their foam with it. Spending alot of money wont increase your skill overnight. However for more advanced people I would recommend buying a motta if you want to improve the defintion on your art, but if your looking for a jug that is just a shear pleasure to use than definatly go for the alessi, if you can justify spending the money.
Good Luck.
