Re: Sometimes our kids push our buttons!
I started doing it in SA because they gave you a free coopers pale ale. Have recently started giving plasma (which you can do every two weeks) I dont have a lot of time for community work so I consider it my little bit I can do for the community.
It is not painful and you get a free milkshake. ;D

Just do it ...Originally posted by 625F5243445142300 link=1234958768/1#1 date=1234966395Very admirable; makes me want to go down tomorrow and give blood.
It is one of the true gifts one can do for another.
Interesting... I know of others in the same boat... And also the reverse...Originally posted by 6458455E545542575F54300 link=1234958768/2#2 date=1234967154Good on him.
I started donating when I was young because my father was a donor.
I normally am quite queasy when I see blood from a cut but donating has never been a problem.
I started as an apprentice, as every on in the factory was doing it... They all did it, as they went through the WARS and that is where many advances and lives were saved. It was something that people did with out thinking about... Today.... 1hr every 3 or 4 months is too much inconvenience... But they would expect it to be available if they needed it
Giving is very safe... :-* Receiving carries some risk for many reasons... However with out it the risk of not surviving or suffering further complications is much higher.
Further more, whole blood is not used as much today, as advancements mean that Plasma / Factor 8 / Anti D and platelets can all be separated as separate products... Thus for one gift, you can now assist in being part of a solution for many.... Burns for example require plasma and the upsurge of donations after the Fires was great.... The issue is that, people need to continue to give. As for many reasons many can not or no longer be allowed.
About 1 in 10 donate BUT 1 in 3 need... Do the maths.. :

Sometimes our kids push our buttons!
For those that might visit or work with The Coffee Guy and or Veneziano Caffe, they would have potentially met or been looked after by my daughter. In addition they and a few others know that she has had a passion since a young age and is very committed to ballet. With a goal to be in one of the top Russian dance troupes etc..
My son, has struggled since leaving school to find his place and has had two separate years at UNI and finally decided to join up and after some final medicals... The Army for 4 years.
Many are aware of the fires and the need for blood products due to the high demand, on top of an already scarce resource. I am currently employed by Qld Health, but have had some 25 years being around blood. A paper or two, Australian standards and teaching material etc around the temperature management and storage of blood and blood products including vaccines etc.
The Australian Red Cross are also active in obtaining donors and 2009 is the "Year of the donor".
The file is rather large, but you can watch and or go to to U-tube and read a little more in the description, as to why I am a proud father... I also understand there will be rolling short clips hitting the TV stations..
