You mean aside from its greasy toughness, lack of flavor, and high price? Huh
Maybe Great Australian Microwave Popcorn is better than Great American Microwave Popcorn? (wondering if I have just thrown down the gauntlet...) - though I am a little dubious of anything that uses dehydrated imitation butter flavoring...
Good story Javaphile, nothing EVER goes as planned.
Not wanting to inhibit the humor, I used to grow pop corn, 500 hectares at a time, and part of the testing at our silo complex was a hot air popper, as the change in volume, and number of un-popped kernels was an indication as to if we had got the urea (ammonium carbonate) application rate right, as this influences protein content, and hence change in volume when popped.
Enough tech stuff, My input is how to run the popper.
Ours was a black and decker, and had a plastic door, hinged from the bottom, that stayed closed until pushed open by the popped kernels.
This kept the un-popped kernels inside until a "layer" of popped kernels developed above the fluid bed, and stopped the un-popped kernels from flying out.
I agree with the dislike of microwave popcorn, and there is nothing better than eating popcorn that you had a hand in growing.
This said, our popcorn, 2500 tonnes of it, went to Greens, a purveyor of microwave popcorn ;D

Is it just my imagination...or does anyone else think that a red theater style popcorn popper coffee roaster & cart would be a great addition to any home?

Not your imagination at all!, it could be the poor mans 5Kg Topper, or the serious popper roasting maniacs ultimate tool! ;D
And when trying to sell the Minister of Finance on it remember the title of the thread. Safety requires this purchase! One must cage those scary seeds/beans so that when they turn violent and explode no one looses an eye or gets burned! ;D

4oz?
Why not look for a full sized one?
Thats 4oz of unpopped popcorn. Which will produce about 5l of popped popcorn. Plenty for a big snack for me and a friend. And if I need more Ill just start another batch as one finishes.

Could it be
I think its all a conspiracy by the popcorn producers to scare people away from using poppers and keep them buying microwave popcorn so as to fatten the suppliers wallets!!
I have repeated the experiment using only 2 tablespoons of corn with similar results. Half the corn is blown out of the chamber by the popping of other kernels and then to add to the carnage kernels in the bowl will start popping blowing popcorn out of the bowl and onto the counter and floor! Sheesh! I think its time to start looking for a different popping mechanism! And NO! It wont be the Gothot or Primo!!! :
