Re: OK Techno geeks...tell me about ipods

Another vote for the DVD option. Maybe something like this:

    http://www.dse.com.au/cgi-bin/dse.storefront/4ab6c2b80382123a2740c0a87e0106b9/Product/View/G7189

    - Dual screens
    - 12v cigarette lighter adapter
    - Mounting straps to attach units to car headrests (I imagine they could also be used to wrap around your childrens heads to keep their mouths shut if worst comes to worst :P)
    - Remote control

    Relatively cheap too

Re KKs post above, I had a DGTEC digital set top box. Never had a problem with it in 2+ years I was using it. Only stopped using it because it was standard def and I went to a high def network-capable PVR unit.

The only reservation Id have with something like that though is that youd be up for 2 x ipods, one for each unit as well. not to mention that if one took an accidental trip out the window youre out a player AND an ipod...... expensive proposition

Re: OK Techno geeks...tell me about ipods

IPod is great as a personal music device. We also use ours as a sound system, or in the car.

I have used mine for video - but this is actually a bit more trouble that it is worth. Videos work a little better in the US, where iTunes actually contains a lot of TV, which can be downloaded quite cheaply and loaded onto your iPod. To do this yourself, with TV or DVDs which you own, requires a piece of software to convert it all into iPod friendly format - In my opinion, this is a bit of a downfall - and apple doesnt look to be fixing this anytime soon.

If its for music, its awesome. If its for video, then the suggestions that others have made already, regarding portable DVD devices is probably the thing to go with.

      Goodluck Luwaks!

Thanks all contributors to this thread. In the end we decided to just throw lots of money at the problem and now have a dual screen dvd for the car and an ipod touch thingie with mini sound system for music. Apparently the ipod touch also does games, email, and makes espresso.

        Cheers

I know its too late for Luwaks who posted this, but for others looking at portable music players:

If you appreciate good quality music Id recommend stearing clear of the ipod. In my experience it is very poor music quality...and what Apple promotes as high quality MP3s is a complete joke.

I ended up with a unit from Cowon. Its fairly old now and has been superceded, but is the iaudio x5. It gives a far superior sound quality to the ipods.

Also am using FLAC files (Free Lossless Audio Codec) for far superior quality files than MP3s. I am really disappointed in the dumbing down of sound quality happening of late due to MP3s and poor quality players.

Not that this is in anyway portable, but I cant wait to be earning good money again to buy a high end turntable and valve amp - real sound!
Already have great speakers and CD player, but nothing beats good vinyl.

Anyway, enough of my rant on good quality sound.

                :-? :-? :-? :-?

                What?
Without a doubt Mp3 would beat a vinyl record for hi fi. Let alone putting the signal through a valve. They use valves in guitar amps to create distortion. They are great for that.

Back on to portability, can you really hear the difference in a car any way? If your Mp3s are 320 ** Id doubt it.
In fact if you have a good home system I dont think you could pick it, even side by side.

If that is what you want, then you drive them in to their non liner response range...

They are very good and one of the best at rejecting noise and unwanted interference - Medical and Defence still use for very good reasons...

A 16Kg platter with a first cut vinal and a good Valve amp will out perform any of ya modern crap.. Hands down..

But then again like many things, including BETA tapes and 8 track cassette systems.. Only those with knowledge and experience on our side, will ever understand.. The youth of today only know what is on Twitter 8-) :-? : :-[ :P :-X :-/ :-*

MP3 and other compressed (lossy) formats have served us well. Without these guys attempting to change the way that we listen to and stream music/video, we wouldnt even have cool gadgets like iPods or FLAC codecs.

I have heard that once you FLAC you dont go back. For Audiophiles, I am sure that something like the iTunes store which to date, only offers mp4 equivalent encoding is a bit of a downside.

mp3HD is coming out soon, which utilizes a similar kind of lossless compression algorithm to FLAC. I have no doubt that Apple will go down the open standard/lossless road soon. They dropped DRM didnt they? Give them some credit.

Regardless - just because iTunes Store doesnt offer your particular flavor of lossless audio does not mean that iTunes application doesnt. ALAC (Apple Lossless) can be used to rip your music, and is quite good. Its proprietary (so Sonos or other systems might hate it) but its still quite good.

                      ROFLMAO

I have a valve preamp on my bass amp. Why? Makes the tone nice, smooth, warm and fuzzy (note: DISTORTION). All with in the so called "linear" response range.

My dad is an electronic engineer. One of his hobbies is hi fi and more specifically hi fi amps. His speakers where valued at $20,000 eight years ago. The reason for these speakers was to be able to hear the difference between his models of amps. He got to the point where he needed to match the FETs to get any better.
One of his early amps was put up against a $6000 reference amp, it kick its butt. The later ones where getting into the Krell arena.

I have heard this "valve" thing before. People rant and rave about it. You go and listen to their very expensive amp and it doesnt live up to a $200 trannie amp. Sounds like someone putting a rug over the speakers.
Passages of music, instruments that can quite clearly be heard on a solid state just arent there with a valve.

                      As for vinyl well....
Cant be bothered. If you really think that a vinyl can beat a CD for Hi Fi then you are either deaf or in lala land.

Well, you give yourself up here bassway! Have you ever listened to good vinyl? That is, first press on a high end turntable. CDs are a million miles from this.

Have you not seen the disclaimer on a lot of CDs that this recording is limited and cannot achieve the full dimension of analog...etc.etc. (those companies willing to tell the truth that is and not just market "this is the best" crap that marketers do.)

As per amp, well I actually want both so wont try to argue either way here. But will second AM when he says:

I can quite readily pick the difference between a lossless digital format and any of the compressed versions on my living room system--although 320 kbps is fine for the car.

Apple Lossless is what I use routinely now inside the house, and stream my digital via an Airport to my DAC/amps/speakers.

And as much as I like the convenience and cost of the digital source and my iPhone Remote app running iTunes, vinyl is more musical and involving for me, despite having more inherent noise.

Ive heard some great valve amps, but do prefer my ME 15/850 combo for its bass performance.

I am an Electronics Eng and there are real ones and good ones and many that ... Well enough said...

$20K for a set of speakers..  Cheep... Try many times that for one, and have to be custom shipped from Sweden.. Also have to have the house built around the 4 of them...

Mine is bigger than your... Take a cement pill...  ;D

Besides once ya over about 16 - 18 (in the old days) about 14 to day...Ya hearing is all stuffed and in particular at the higher end...

By the time I reached 30 I could no longer service Amps and coms equipment, as I could not hear the frequencies.. To day, every one has a cro... Back then we did it the hard way....

Thus ya can talk all ya want as to what ya can and cantt hear but the facts are  facts.  The  biomedical equipment that we work on and tune;  to look after patients with hearing loss etc..  Is a little sensitive to say the least and it is always a laugh;  when the audiophiles come in and try to show off... And then they try to cover up...  Cause they are as good as deaf and can not fool the equipment... Drinking buddies and the local WOW sales person... But not the equipment.... !!!! But they still try raving about their sound systems etc..

I am also a sound guy for a band.. So bash on all ya like..  But I cant hear ya any more...     Thats  why we use test equipment and then work out where to point the sound, so that the bodies suck it up... They the punters, have a perception as to what they hear; but most of it is smoke and good sound tecs...  ;D

Damn that cement pill is working all ready.. Need a Guava and custard pie - With a coffee of course  ;D    :
