Re: Dakar time!

Whats the deal with the tyre change?
Is there a minimum distance each tyre must be used for? Surely if its mangled/ruined he can change it?
Someone please put me out of my misery ;D

Coma hit with big penalty for tyre change
10 Jan 2010, 4:00 AM
Marc Coma, Dakar reigning champion in the motorbike category, has been handed a six-hour penalty by organisers for an illegal tyre change during the previous days seventh stage.
Coma had been running in second place overall, one hour behind leader Cyril Despres of France, however the penalty has all but put an end to the Spanish KTM riders title defence.
"The stop he made behind a house and the images we have thanks to Google which show exactly where he stopped and for how long, coupled with todays high definition images of the tyre... these images are clear, the tyre did not do 200km," said Marc Ducrocq, course director.
"The decision has therefore been taken by the organisers to hand him a six-hour penalty."
The punishment leaves fellow KTM rider Despres now one hour and 20 minutes ahead of his new nearest rival, Helder Rodrigues of Portugal on a Yamaha, with Norwegian KTM racer Pal Ullevalseter a further five minutes back.
It now seems that only a big accident or mechanical failure can stop Despres from winning his third Dakar title.
Coma had told reporters after Stage 7: "It was a very long day. But its over – we made it to the rest day. We will be able to tend to the bike. Today, I had to be mindful of the speed to spare my tires."
Saturday is a rest day at the halfway point in the rally, before the 9,000km adventure resumes with a 472km special stage from Antofagasta to Copiapo.

Re: Dakar time!
Its always sad when it finishes.... its such a highlight at this time of year.
From day 1&2 where they were cold, wet and muddy to day 4&5 where they are in 6 foot of talc like sand in the dryest place on earth.
Last night seeing the dust hang 200 foot high in the still morning air was stunning.
Seeing that fat hummer intermittently airborne across the valley at what must have been well over 100 mile an hour was crazy
...and watching the poor blokes on bikes just fall over in the dunes and have to dig themselves out when they lost momentum was heart breaking to watch.
Darn good viewing from the comfort of home though.
(While in my head I would love to compete in it reality tells me that I would last about 100 meters on a chook chaser in that environment)

Re: Dakar time!
The greatest off road race in the world.
Never miss it . The greatest way to start a new year.
Australia lost a great Dakar racer Andy Caldecott in `06 during the race.
Lets hope all contestants get to the end of the race alive.
