Re: Northern/Southern Lights
If you ever get a chance to see a good display--grab it with both hands. Pictures and videos dont do it!
I was in northern Canada (just south of Algonquin Park in Ontario) when, as a kid, I saw a marvellous display. They were even better than the NASA link above, with rippling curtains of blue, red, turquoise and purple. The "edges" were really sharp, and it did look like curtains, not like some of the vague blurry lights that often get photographed.
It is still burned in my visual cortex after more than 45 years as one of the most spectacular things I have ever seen.

Yep, mine too, have you seen this recent NASA link, spectacular. http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap101124.htmlOriginally posted by 0728223F460 link=1291548012/6#6 date=1291562389Both the northern and southern lights are high on my "bucket list".
I had a chance to see them in Denmark in 1998... but social events got in the way those few days and I forgot. :

Re: Northern/Southern Lights
Yeah I knew it was a long shot there flynn aus but as strong as these are I thought there was a chance they may extend far enough towards the equator for some of yall to see them. Its rare to see them here and hardly ever are they visible from the heart of the city!

Re: Northern/Southern Lights
It would be good to see but "the aurora australis (or the southern lights) ..... is only visible from high southern latitudes in Antarctica, South America, or Australasia". This means only those in Tasmanian or South Island, New Zealand are likely to see it.

Northern/Southern Lights
If its night where you are step outside and take a gander at the pole nearest you! Im at 45N latitude and in the heart of a major metropolitan area and the northern Lights are clearly visible. Ive rarely seen them this bright this far from the pole and theyre displaying the full range of colors as well! A very unusual event indeed!
