  • Hi All,

Another sponge here trying to make as much sense of all the information on this site as possible, it has already helped with some hardware purchases but now comes the hard part! I look forward to the friendly help I have seen given to others, and I promise I will check search before I ask anything.

    Cheers

    John

    • Hi all,

I have no choice.... cannot drink alcohol (allergic), hate smoking, anti-drugs, and no ice cream (overweight)? Coffee probably the best alternative to get hook into...

Since primary school my mom gave me milk every single day "stained" with weak instant coffee. The ratio of coffee increased as I grew up, but it was still instant one. Even my wife brew me instant coffee (sometime flavoured - Jarrah). But with career and lots of hobbies, I never bother about coffee until just recently...

With some restructuring in the office, I got then a coffee drinker colleague that always bring beautiful coffee aroma in our 6-persons room with his daily long black from our Rancilio Tecna. It was just "International Roast", but , ghosh, smell much nicer than the Blend43 alternative.... (and also because I lost bridge partner) then I am thinking Coffee is quite exotic addiction. Lots can be done with the variability/factor making a shot (engineer's mind), it's good for preventing Parkinson, and save some money(loong term..) - (sorry Coffee Club, but if I am in a hurry/travelling, I come to you)

So, taking action, here I am... completed a Barista course, buy 2nd hand Via Venesia, lurking Coffee Snobs and You Tube, and slightly cynical wife with my new found hobby ("so, you don't like my Jarrah anymore...")
Please go easy on me :-)

      Cheers,

      • Hi all,
I found this site looking for non stale beans a few weeks ago but bought another supermarket bag of beans because I couldn't wait for mail order(when I finally took the plunge my green starter bag was here within 24 hours). I started drinking socially over 20 years ago - my Pa wouldn't let me drink it with milk so when I went off to college I mixed it with hot chocolate until I could stomach it(American preground bricks like JFG and Folger's) then switched to black. When I moved to Australia the cafe coffee was much nicer but at home everyone seemed to drink instant. A couple of years ago I bought a spice grinder and some Lazumba beans that must have been fresh out of the roaster and I've had hit or miss success ever since - got my greens now and a used 0480, trying to go easy on the budget but I'm going to have to upgrade from my plunger and moka pot soon to keep up with my beans and grinder!

          • Hi,

Another long time lurker! Thanks to all the info on the site I have recently purchased a Giotto Evo V2 and Compak Push. It made me realise how much I have to learn....getting pretty good results though. Great site and love the banter!

            • Hi All,

I am another long time forum lurker! After having discovered the joys of good coffee as a barista during my time at uni, it wasn't long before I discovered this site and the info within, which combined with lots of practice has allowed me to develop my technique . Now I have finished Uni and am working as an Engineer i was able to afford some shiny new toys, A Giove II Dual Boiler and Compak K3 touch. I am looking into learning how to roast coffee and figured here would be a good place to ask questions

              Thanks
              Chris

              • Um... not actually knew here, been back slidden since Nov 2011 due to migraine problems etc. Not free from them completely yet but able to have the odd coffee and still enjoy it immensely. Have 3 mates I taught to roast who are happy to roast me a bag or two (teach a man to fish)
Coffee equipment is now down to a couple of hundred dollars worth

Hope you are all well, have missed the good humored banter and excellent learning forum !

My old man had a straight razor, I don't think I could use one.
The NOT AU forum of CHCH was a great venting for that time. With the Insurance crap you need a good coffee.

Start with a quality razor, professionally honed, strop it, use proper soap and a brush (not canned foam) and you'll never look back.

It's a lot like instant/preground > "proper" coffee, and as with coffee, will pay for itself many times over if you're not one of those masochists who get two weeks out of a cartridge.

(It's also great for sensitive skin, which is why I straight shave, besides the closer/better quality).

Funny, I was amazed at how similar the world of traditional shaving was to coffee. So many parallels.
