Hi everyone, Ive been lurking around here a lot lately, and felt it was time to show myself!
My name is Daniel, I own a Gaggia Baby and am enjoying it immensely! I havent got a grinder yet, but I have a old coffee bag to which I add $2 every time I drink a coffee, so I should be buying any moment now! Im currently at Uni, in my final year of Adventure Eco-Tourism and loving it. In all my spare time (what spare time), I hang around with my beautiful girlfriend, race mountain bikes, rock climb, bush walk or generally adventure around the place.

Great to be a member of the Australian Coffee Snobs!

Hi everyone I just joined the group

Im VERY new to roasting coffee ;D Ive been doing some research & did more first roasting yesterday, or maybe I baked it LOL LOL well see when it comes to tasting it! I wouldnt hold my breath on this one LOL but the beans do look good

I have found it very easy to roast but Im also told that getting the taste perfected of the home roasted bean is the hard part. Im baking in the oven for the time being but dont intend on sticking to this way. Ive found some really great roasters as well as ideas for making & modifying & still looking into them & reading up on reviews before I make my final decision.

I am wondering though, when a wok is used for roasting does it need to be stainless steal? I have a non stick but am wondering with the over heating of a non stick, would it work???? I also have parrots in the house to consider when roasting coffee but if the wok is used it may be even worse for them.

Anywho, hello all ;D Ill be sure to be in for loads more Qs as I go.

                      Gday BeanGreen,

                      Welcome to CoffeeSnobs..... [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Now that CoffeeSnobs has been running for a few years, there is an absolute wealth of information to be discovered just by using the search tool, or site specific searches via Google 8-). All that aside, we are always happy to answer any questions you may have as you begin this wonderful journey of discovery to coffee nirvana.

Re: the wok, probably not the ideal way to get the best roasts but if it was me, I think Id go for the Stainless Steel Wok and use a whisk or something similar to ensure the beans are vigorously agitated so as to avoid scorching.

Depending on the batch sizes, you might find it easier to go with a popper from an op-shop or CCs and the ubiquitous tall Heinz Soup Can Chimney that is often recommended around here. Ive seen em for sale locally for between $5-10 so its a cheap and effective way to get started. Plus, theres heaps of info to be found on how to get the best out of popper roasting [smiley=laugh.gif].

All the best BG, and will look forward to reading future posts on how youre getting along....

                      Cheers,
                      Mal.

                        Yeah,
                        welcome GB,

Id forgo the non stick wok, if its teflon coated it will release fumes at about 250C which is pretty close to where youll take your beans.

Suggest you also look at the "coretto" [Bread maker + Heat Gun] method as it is cheap, easy and makes a good size batch.

Let us know how the beans go, Im sure youll be pleasantly surprised.

                          Thanks Mal & reubster

I did a couple of oven roasts over the past few days. First smelled a tad burnt LOL, the other smelled a little better, but just a little...

Yesterday I bought myself a 20 buck pop corn popper & used it this morning. Already impressed 8-) the beans smell sweet & much nicer than the last 2 batches Cant wait to taste this one.

After using the pop corn popper I doubt Id go back to the oven or try the wok.
I am also looking into the coretto as a possibility, heard plenty of good things about roasting this way

Hi BeanGreen, Corretto is definitely the way to go, I started on a popper and it was good, but you can only roast small amounts, when I did 5 roasts in row I cremated the poor thing, thus I went and bought a Breville BM, down to Bunnings for a Ryobi HG and a $10 cooling fan, some pine and chipboard and ally fly screen mesh for the bean cooling box and started Corretto roasting, the results have been outstanding.
Ive been doing 500g roasts and getting lovely even roasts, I have a DMM datalogger in transit, so I will be able to monitor my temps soon.
                            Good luck with your roasting..............................greenman

                              Hi all
Being new here, I would like to say gday and share a small insight into my journey from (urgh instant) to now.

It all started with a drip filter machine, then had a couple of bad cappuccino makers and now Miss Silvia and a Sunbeam em480 are waiting under the Christmas tree - Its Mum & Dads turn to spoil themselves seeing Santa always spoils the kids. Anyway I am sure I will have lots to tell in the future. In the meantime I am learning lots from all your posts and who knows maybe will attempt some roasting in the future as well.

                              Thanks

                              Michelle
