Hi mate and welcome to the site. There are some people here from the industry but there are also a whole bunch of nutters here who simply adore good coffee and will go to amazing lengths at home to secure it...ask away!

        ... and back to you

As Ozscott alluded to, there is a varied spectrum of members here with differing backgrounds, yet a common interest in quality coffee.

Ask specific questions, & Im sure the answers will flow!

Banning rarely, if ever happens here. And even then after great deliberation amongst the moderator team. So, enjoy your stay...

            Hi!
Im relatively new to this whole coffeesnobbery game but Im pretty keen to develop my snob potential.

Anyway, Ive only got a little Breville Cafe Roma machine (I cant afford anything else at the moment) and Ive been told that to improve the coffee it produces I need to get a proper filter basket for it, rather than the pressurised one that comes standard.

Is this right? If so, where do I get one (in Sydney)?

            Andrew

Im new... Well on here anyways.

I work as a full time barista at a cafe in Newcastle, and if anyone has any information that they can impart to me, about anything at all to do with coffee... Or better yet, if they know a really really good barista in Newcastle that would be open to talking/possibly giving me some training, I would be really really grateful.

UNfortunantly I have no control over how my boss chooses to do things, but if I ever manage to own my own cafe one day, at least I will have more of an idea with how I want to do things.
              Thanks

Hi Sarz, welcome to Coffee Snobs.

If you are the full time barista what sort of things do you want control over that you say the boss chooses to do differently?

Also, youve asked for training. Have you had any at all?
Im curious because you have a full time barista job and seem to lack a little confidence.
I also ask because I talked myself into a part time barista job last year with no commercial experience, though I have had training.

Im interested in your coffee journey so far and your plans.

                        Hi,

                        Another total noob here!
Bought Breville Cafe Roma machine couple of weeks ago, mainly because my wife loves cappucinos, as I am (or rather was ;D) more of a tea drinker.
First attempts were very ordinary. Then came accross Coffee Snobs & started learning...
Bought some quality (not a supermarket ones) freshly roasted ground coffee (did not have grinder at the time), replaced original filter basket with non pressurized one and what a difference!
Today I bought Sunbeam E0480 at, of all places, local Big W - it was the only place in Newcastle that has them in stock!
Ive ordered some more coffee & am ready to learn some more.
In the past few weeks I drank more coffee then I did in the past 2 years....
Big thanks for all the great posts & tips.

                        Cheers

Hey all, Im new around here, sort of. Stumbled upon the site a year or so ago when I first had ideas about putting together a good coffee-making setup. Had a look around, learned heaps, and then other, non-caffeinated things had to take priority. Now its time to make it a reality 8-)

This site has, by far, been the most useful and informative Ive found. Awesome stuff. [smiley=thumbup.gif]

                              Im a believer! 8-)
I just received my adfim grinder, and after 5 mins trying different grinds, I pulled a delicious shot from my bog standard Breville Icon. Its the best coffee Ive made by a country mile, and that was using (shock horror!) fairtrade beans at least 6 months old! I have a non-pressurised basket on the way, and cant wait to see what that does to the flavour. Up till now I was getting slightly bitter shots - having a fresh, accurate grind has transformed the results from mediocre to as good as anything Ive had in a cafe - thanks for going on and on about the grinder, now I understand just how important it is! To all you other newbies out there, make the grinder your first priority, the rest will follow, even if you only have a low end machine.
                              Im a happy bean.

With good fresh coffee, some unpressurised baskets and some talent, you will soon be well on the way to nirvana...
