Good to find a useful thread like this one just to get the ball rolling.

Got a welcome from another member and cant reply to it till I post something... very clever, heh heh!

Guess my username reveals my prejudice, but thats just because I discovered this bean and enjoy it heaps, so havent bothered to look much further.

Found this site through doing a search for Guatemala Huehuetenango after reading about it in the newsletter from http://www.coffeereview.com/ in the US - and so glad to find there is a sophisticated Aussie information source since Im kind of fed up with reading about their stuff which I havent been able to find here. Finally decided to search and see what was out there!

So here I am... Im no aficianado, I warn you, so will mainly listen and learn. Thanks in advance!

Hi first time poster long time reader. It is great to find a place where people share such a beautiful thing; coffee.

I have had the pleasure to have worked in a nice little espresso bar in Mildura and a dodgy cafe in Thirroul, NSW, which have honed my skills and love of the simple (or is it extremely complex) coffee bean.

Anyway, just thought id do the right thing and get involved and introduce myself to the coffee snobs of Australia.

          Cheers,
          James

Yes, go easy is the phrase of the day (month). I am new to rural Aus and waited until I arrived before making the jump to a better quality manual machine. Have been making coffee in an everyday breville machine (basic unit) for a few years with OK success. Having said that, moved to the Silvia and its as if I know very little about the art  :-[ so big learning curve ahead witha  few tonnes of wasted beans coming up  :-[

Is there a link to puck problem identification..I tried a search to no avail.

Anyway hope to learn from others on this board as sounds as if there are some very learned coffee snobs in residence

Welcome purfect coffee...I think if you search "wet pucks" youd probably return a few results. And check out the threads on Silvia and getting the best out of her...there are a stack of them in the 500 - 1500 machine range forum...

And welcome to rural Australia...its nice out here! ;D

I have been a busy bee sqeezing in coffee runs and reading the above link that was supplied to me over the weekend. Really recommend reading thss for newbies - wealth of info there to get to grips with the interactions and simply put, the basics. I am only on my first couple of pages and then disappeared to do some playing accepting that Im gonna waste some beans.

Tonight, no drinking all the cups [Yeah right] other than tasting. Well, got my rocky grinder jacked up now (read a few threads to ensure completed the process good) so ground some beans and did some tests with dosing and checking after fitting the group handle as Randy suggests and after a couple of cups my coffee moved from foul to drinkable and visually so so different.

Gives one heart that given time and experimentation one can master the art. So just gonna add my plug and say thanks to all those who offer advice on this site   8-)

                          Great stuff PC.... 8-)

Glad to hear that progress is being made and youre having fun, thats the main thing ;D. Yes, it can be difficult to convey, in words, the processes and tactility that need to be employed in order to consistently produce great espresso. Repositories like AGs are invaluable for this reason [smiley=tekst-toppie.gif]

                          Enjoy the journey.... ;D

                                Hi all

Another newbie post here. I bought a Krups 5030 some time ago (very cheap - please dont laugh at me) and a SB 4080 and thought I was doing pretty well, but after doing some research here, decided to experiment a bit more with the grinder settings. I got down to a very fine grade, but unfortunately the Krups refused to push anything through other than a few drops, which were really quite different to anything else I have tasted (not hard, I generally dont drink espresso), but very full bodied and without any bitterness - really very very nice. I guess I know the answer to this question, but is this more like what REAL espresso is supposed to taste like?
Does anyone know if it is common for Krups to pike out like that? Do other machines pike out too?......I feel upgraditis setting in.......

Final question - are there any of the CS sponsors to the left from Perth?

                                Cheers
