  • Re: Hi! Im new here. Go easy on me!

    Hi all,

In November I decided to get an espresso machine so I could make decent coffee at home.  I had a bunch of credit card points I was going to buy it with so based on the available options I started researching the models.  Coffeesnobs reviews came up in the search results on google and I have been reading the forums ever since.  I had no idea how much was involved in making a good cup of coffee!

I ended up getting the Sunbeam EM6910 & EM0450 about a week ago.  Thanks to the forum sponsors section I also discoved that Veneziano is just around the corner from where I do martial arts.  They open again today so Ill be dropping in there later this week to try some fresh beans since Ive used supermarket ones the last week. Probably not a bad thing since I wasted a few trying to get my dose/tamp, etc. right.  Still havent got there yet, but thanks to threads like those that Shot_Gun started I at least understand the adjustments I need to make to get a good shot.  Ill get there eventually, and in the mean time my over/under extracted coffees still taste a lot better than instant.

    Cheers
    James

      Welcome to Coffee Snobs James.

What martial arts do you study and for how long have you been doing it?

Im afraid you will have to readjust when you get fresh beans.
Hint: Youll probably need to grind courser as stale (read supermarket) beans need to be ground finer.

Thanks for the welcome & tip TG. No doubt there will be an adjustment required once I get some freshly roasted beans.

Ive been doing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for 2.5years. I train at an MMA club and initially wanted to train in a few different styles. But fairly early on I decided that I would rather be mediocre at one than sucking at them all, and just chose to focus on the BJJ.

Props to you for 30+ years of Karate. That is some serious dedication!

              Hi every one.

I just joined up today, but have been browsing the site for a while reading up on information to guide me through my latest purchase. But more on that later.

I have been in to coffee since I was 18. I started work at a design studio that had a cool looking coffee machine, at the time I didnt like the taste of coffee and never understood it. All I knew is that machine looked a lot of fun to operate!

So I began making coffee on that machine. I never got any good on it as I was only making 1 a day.

Fast forward a few years and I changed jobs... luckily they also had a machine which I am still using to this day. An Azkoyen Bravo with a Mini Mazzer grinder. It is a good set up but I think the Bravo is on its last legs.

I jump at the chance to serve up drinks to clients! Many comment on how good it tastes. We have been using a range of beens on this machine. Illy, Grinders and more often, Cosmorex.

Now, my home machine was a hand me down from my fiancés parents when they upgraded to a fully auto machine that cost way too much and punches out watery coffee after watery coffee.

The Breville was okay, but again... watery and not satisfying so I moved on to a moka pot which I have been using for a year. Trying different methods to reduce the burnt taste that they are known for. I still like the moka and will use it for when I go camping and such...

Fast forward to yesterday. After much reading on the site I chose the ever popular Silvia/Rocky combo and picked it up from Cosmorex yesterday.

My first cup was this morning, Im not going to lie... it was average. A little bit burnt. I will need plenty of practice before I will be satisfied with the set up, but having it been set up for less than 24hours, I am looking forward to tweaking and getting to know her very well.

                Hi all!

Like all the newbies here (well, most of us) I have been lurking for quite a while, and have finally decided to start posting!
I live in Melbourne, and have been using a Breville Ikon for a while. I have finally decided that ive had enough of it, I am now looking for a Silvia/Rocky. Since pretty much all of melbourne is out of stock, Im guessing ill have to wait a few months before finally getting my hands on one!
In the past few months, Ive been buying more coffee than I have been making myself and have become a regular customer of BBB, 7 seeds, deadman, proud mary, st ali...etc and sampled too many coffees to be able to remember all of them ;D
For the last two months, I have been stuck in a summer job in Bunbury, WA and will be here until mid-febuary. I havent been able to find anywhere that makes decent coffee, and have unwillingly decided to abstain from having any until I go back to Melbourne. So, right now Im finding myself in coffee detox, and suffering from horrible withdrawal symptoms
CS has been my way of keeping myself connected with the coffee world, and I would like to thank you all for that!
Hopefully Ill get to know a few of you guys a bit better in the next few months.

                Yannick

                  Hi all,

Finally took the bullet and obviously with the CFOs permission obtained a 2 month old Gaggia Classic from the evil bay! Was worried sick for a couple of days after purchasing it while waiting for delivery! All is well .. receipt shown machine bought Dec 09 and everything seems operational (touchwood).

Pairing the gaggia with a sunbeam em0480 at the moment. Was using a Presso for a while to get my coffee hits but now relegated to travel duties.

Welcome any tips and comments. Will post some success shots soon.

Ive been reading through the forums and will be investing in a Rancilio Silva at some stage, although Id like something I could foam and run a shot at the same time...

                          Gday AngerManagement!

                          Thanks for the hello.

I dont seem to have problem with taste, its more a heat problem. Especially with the steam arm. It just doesnt seem to get things hot. Im gonig to invest in a thermometer asap to see if its just me or not.

When I say no problem with taste, I have it set up how I like it, strong enough that the spoon melts

                          Cheers,

                          Ben

Descale was, a month ago or there abouts, its had it done twice.

Just use regular tap water.... (is this about to get me beaten with chocy shaker?)

Wait for it.... Not a chocy shake but a Greg Pulman tamper on ya tap hand ;D

So what did you clean it with and does teh steam wand etc get included..

Unless done correctly regular tap water will scale up ya unit quite bad..

So where are you located :-?

Could be a sponsor or another CS close but that might be able to provide real cleaning stuff
