Gday Paul and welcome to CS.  I spent a few years in Oregon during high school and loved it. Great part of the world.

Thanks Kit! Oh, and thanks to the moderator who moved this post to the right thread.

Oregon is nice; its where my coffee obsession all began! Luckily for me Tazzie weather is a lot like Oregon weather.

        Hello all

Ive been an on-and-off lurker for a few years now and recently thought I should really sign up and say hi

This board has been a goldmine of knowledge on many different topics, and all your contributions are greatly appreciated!

Speaking of goldmines of knowledge - Mick from Cosmorex and his colleague whose name escapes me helped me enormously at their coffee making course a couple of weeks ago. I wish Id done this quite a lot earlier... oh well, live and learn!

I got my starter pack of green beans from GreenBay the other day, and just this morning tasted my first roast! I could not be happier with the results, let alone the sense of self satisfaction

Its such a dead simple process, yet so few people realise it can be done...

        My hardware:

Gaggia Carezza, bought 2nd hand in 2007 and still going strong!
Sunbeam EM480 (not convinced yet about the need to mod it...)
        Breville Crazy Popper
Can of Heinz Baked Beans for chimney duties

These dont need modification but occasionally might need an extra washer.
          Is that what you meant?

Hi Im new. Dont hold it against me.
So my coffee experience mainly relates to iced coffee, which i can drink up to 3L a day of. All the carton type.
I did have a delonghi some years ago but soon got bored and put it in the cupboard. For christmas my girlfriend got me a Sunbeam EM5600 and Sunbeam EM0415 grinder.
Ive used it a few times. With GJ beans. Which i now know is a no no, also from watching the vids on expresso company ive also learnt that i make the milk scream, over bubble it, dont dose enough and dont tamp enough.

So im expecting big things when i do get all things right.
Im not sure what the deal is with the krups conversion ive read it in a lot of posts but im not too sure what i should be buying what it does and why i need it?

To be fair i thought my coffee was fairly decent before...

So any help for a new snob, much appreciated.

Welcome to the rocky road of coffee  ;D

We wont hold it agents you... But you will be reminded at times

Note: Most of the iced coffee is just syrups and often contains little if any caffeine.. Just read the fine print and ingredients....

As to the Krups... Look for Pressurised and unpressurised and all the chit chat that goes with it..

Here is one of the best tips... Learn to use the main search feature... Takes a little while to get to understand how it works... But it will solve most of ya problems for you.

                Coffee powder actually.
Brownes and Masters are the two main ones here.
                0.7% coffee powder....

Yes, the washer and other mods like the masking tape padding for a more snug fit of the burrs, and the de-stepping of grind adjustments

And thank you, though it feels weird to be welcomed to a place Ive been frequenting for so long already :P

                          Hello snobs,

I found this little nook of the intarweb whilst searching for product reviews for my first coffee machine.  Been meaning to buy one for a while, and through my employers reward points program I saw a Sunbeam Ristretto so I have now placed my order.  Humble, yet capable machine from all reports.

I must confess Im probably about 10 degrees of noob-ness below a regular noob, I do vaguely know the differences between each type of brew, but how to brew them I still need to learn.

My partner and I are from Brisbane and visited Melbourne in January this year for the Australian Open.  Drank some seriously good coffee there and hope to one day replicate at home.

Not certain whether this is indeed the case, but coffee making (like photography - another hobby of mine) I hear is 80% technique and 20% equipment related.  Is this true?  What kind of results can I expect with my Ristretto?  Im sure I will upgrade in due time once my skill improves.

                          Cheers,
                          Ian

                            Welcome Ian

Im not sure whether these proportions apply but it is certainly possible to make a good brew on your new machine. Another very important part of the coffee equation is good fresh beans and a good grinder. Buy your beans from one of the sponsors listed on the left of the page and buy a good grinder. Aim for a Sunbeam0480 as a minimum.

Freshly ground, good quality coffee makes a big difference. That was my first CoffeeSnob lesson.

                              Hi guys and girls,

I guess i have ended up at the right place to say hi for my first post so hello to everyone. [smiley=vrolijk_26.gif]  I have been very impressed with the wealth of knowledge available on CS site, well done. Everyone seems to be friendly and very helpful.

All these posts of dose, tamp, extract has made my mouth water to get a nice coffee. My old entry level machine has died and have now been without proper expresso for a few weeks. Well can you count stove top and plunger?

I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of my new well slightly second-hand San Marino Lisa single group its approx 18months old.

I know there is a large selection of site sponsors available, but can anyone suggest someone who can service/give my San Marino Lisa a once over in the S.E. suburbs of Melbourne. I look forward to my time here at CS.

                              Cheers

                              John
