  • Hello from Melbourne

Just thought Id take a minute to introduce myself. Im very much a beginner when it comes to coffee, but Im fascinated with the idea of developing the skills to make good coffee. I have a nespresso machine which Im becoming frustrated with due to the lack of skills and involvement associated with this machine. I recently bought a sunbeam em480 grinder which Im currently using with an old breville roma, but plan on replacing this with possibly a sunbeam 6910 or rancilio silvia after reading these forums. Keen to see the difference when using an unpressurised filter basket.
Thanks everyone for all the great info on these forums, it really helps people like me with no real idea to get a grasp of the basics.

    Shane
P.S. sorry if this is in the wrong channel

      Welcome to CS Shane.

Looks like youre on your way.

If you are up for the challenge I recommend the Silvia because it will last longer and therefore be better value for money.

Making coffee with a 6910 is easy with some basic instruction but the build quality these days is now questionable and I think owners are getting more than a little frustrated with the repair times.

On the other hand the Silvia is built like a tank and just a little care regarding the element will see one outlast many Sunbeams.

Just to throw my thoughts on the Silvia vs Sunbeam, the first 6910 went to my parents, and was quite good so I got one for my place (barely 6 months later - was on a pretty good special at the time) - though not overly bad, I havent been quite as satisfied with the performance.

Other than that, welcome Shane - had a friend comment on the work required to make a coffee (they watched) the other day, but I find it quite enjoyable and absolutely worth it (given the alternative)

            Hey guys!

I found this website whilst googling for information on the new Slayer machines and there was a thread on here talking about it. As soon as i stumbled across this forum i thought to myself that this is the place to be for talking about coffee, equipment, other peoples preferences, information about finding great cafes/espresso bars. So yeah, here i am! And i love it.

Im living in Brisbane and Ive got my own little coffee shop on the corner of Elizibeth Street and George street named "The Frisky Goat" and Im using Expo Bar G10s and Mazzer Grinders.

I appologise if this is frowned upon! (advertising). I just thought Id let you know my role in the Brisbane coffee scene!

            Thanks, Joel.
            Welcome to coffeesnobs Joel!

              Hello all!

I am just a coffee novice at the moment having only recently stopped drinking instant and bought myself a plunger but this site seems to have a wealth of information so hopefully before too long I can start roasting, grinding and brewing my own coffee.

              cheers all

Welcome and welcome to the coffee journey. Dont be ashamed of the plunger...it produces a great cup too!

Was at a friends place tonight for a gathering.
                  Hes no coffee snob.
He borrowed a plunger from work to cater for the guests and I him make the coffee.

Hed bought some coffee from a respectable source and despite my not being a regular user of plunger myself, we made a very nice drop.

                  P.S. Welcome; enjoy!

Welcome to CS Mr Ed, if you want to learn about coffee this is the place to be, members have a wealth of knowledge that they are happy to share with newcomers, before too long the urge to buy ginders, machinery etc will take hold and soon you will be a total coffee tragic like the rest of us.

Im Shawn and of course to the important stuff: - I use an iRoast2 ... favourite bean would be Ethiopean Limu ... I can afford a decent coffee machine but the one I have works well ... and I feel it is all in the grind!!!

Anyway ... I hope to participate a lot more from now on!

                      Cheers

Interesting site and Ive learned a lot so I probably should unlurk.

Im using a Sunbeam EM4800C (with a Krupps basket) and EM0480 grinder (grinder only bought this morning - I was wrestling with getting an even grind from a Sunbeam choppy coffee grinder and I figure that whether Im using a stovetop or a plunger or the Sunbeam espresso machine Im better off with a half decent grinder).

Im still not sure that I dont prefer stovetop tho - but I am a little nervous about them since my last stovetop exploded - the valve stuck and the base came unwelded from the water container with an almighty bang, rocketing the thing across the kitchen spraying walls and ceiling with hot coffee and grounds. Im still finding coffee stains in odd places two months later .

Hi everyone! Just wanted to chime in and say that I have learned (and am continuing to learn) heaps of valuable information from this community!

My equipment history basically goes like this:
                          Nov 2009: Breville Ikon
                          April 2010: Breville Ikon + Sunbeam EM0480
                          1 August: Rancilio Silvia + Sunbeam EM0480
4 August: Rancilio Silvia + Rancilio Rocky

Every purchase I made was influenced heavily by opinions on this website. And I have to say that, as of today, I am really happy with my current setup (even thought Ive only had the Rocky since this morning), and I probably wont look at upgrading for a while! Yeah, right, who am I kidding  : Anyway, this is just a short thank you for the wealth of information I have gleaned from this site in these short few months!

Gday Mark, Silvia and Rocky kept me happy for 9 years and I learned heaps along the way.
Only recently decided it was time to upgrade.
Im sure you will be happy with the combination.
