Hi everyone. New CS user here. Originally from Perth and now in Sydney.

After a few years smashing out coffees on a ~$150 machine, I took the plunge and bought myself an Isomac Tea and Mazzer Mini. (I was convinced to get the combo by positive reviews on CS). Love them both. Unfortunately, I am now looking to sell them as I am moving overseas.

Anyway, just wanted to introduce myself. I should have a post up in the hardware sales section in the next week advertising the machine, grinder and accessories.

    Thanks!
    Welcome to CS tomjones.

Youd better have a read of the Site sales and posting policy (the rules):

Hi all, I am a newbie here and I know absolutely nothing about making good coffee, but I love drinking it, so I have just purchased a Promac Club ME and a LaCimbali Cadet grinder. I hope one day that i will be able to give some advise but for now I will be sponging as much information as possible from all the posts that you people have provided over your time here. So thank you all in advance for your knowledge and help.

          Cheers, Bruce.

Hello snobs, this is my first ever post! No really. I mean I have never been interested enough in any sort of internet forum to be bothered.

Coffee Snobs has become my favourite site recently and I just have to get involved.

                  hello everybody.

first time poster here. I have been lurking around a bit, but decided that the best way to say hi would be via a thread dedicated to it.

Im searching for a good coffee machine/grinder to start my adventure, and Ill probably get a Rancilio Silvia and Rocky grinder to start of with. the way I see it, if I ever do upgrade/fall out with coffee, itll retain most of its resale value if I look after it, as opposed to something else.

now, just need to find a bank to rob way to save up some money quickly for it!

                    Hi all,

I am Gerry, an Indonesian who stumble upon coffee culture in Melbourne. Started my first coffee shops job around 2 years ago and never look back.

I am a clean, quick, but lack of communication skill as a barista. Therefore, here in Coffee Snobs I am gonna seek a way to be a better barista. "Better" in terms of quality of my coffee, efficiency, knowledge on my machine and my small talk.

Thanks and I wish everyone a great day.

Hi. Another new person here. It started recently when my sister gave me her old Breville Cafe Roma. I then found out from a workmate about the virtues of grinding fresh beans, so then came the Smart Grinder after reading some positive reviews on here. Now Im using these two machines and an unpressurised basket in the portafiller. Just cracked my first pack of Ethiopian beans from a site sponsor, though my undeveloped palate doesnt see much difference between that and my Coles 4 month old beans to tell the truth.

Hope I can ask a question here?

Should I keep my entire stash of beans in the grinder hopper, or would they keep fresher in the vacuum pack and fill enough into the hopper each time I grind? It will probably take me a few weeks to get through the 500g bag, and the hopper doesnt seem very air tight?

                      Cheers,
                      Darren

                        Welcome Gerry and Darren

Gerry: not sure if you will learn banter from CS if thats what you are referring to. You are more likely to learn that from watching other baristas, plus your own personality. But you are certain to learn tips about improving your coffee.

Darren: we would have to observe your machine and your technique to understand why you cant taste a difference. I dont think it is your palate in this case.
What condition is the Roma in? Clean and well-maintained? How hot is the water out of the grouphead?
You are best off not adding a lot of beans to the hopper at once. They will deteriorate more rapidly than in the sealed environment of the bag. In fact you are best to get a smaller 250g size 1-way valve bag and add half of your 500g bag to that. Put that aside (in a cool dark cupboard) so that that coffee isnt affected by the frequent opening and closing of the bag. Then, once you get through he first half, the next 250g will not lose as much of its freshness.

                          Hi Flynn,

My machine appears to be in good condition, at least cosmetically, however the internals may be a different story. Im planning to buy a cleaning product today and give it some maintenance. How hot shoud the water be from the group head anyway?

As far as technique goes, yes that certainly may be a factor too.

Thanks for the tips on bean storage, might put some back into the bag and into the cupboard.

                            Hi all and welcome!

Darren, keep your beans in the bag and then store in a sealed container in a cupboard or your pantry. You will find that they will lose freshness being stored in the hopper. Pour enough into the grinders hopper to make yourself a coffee each time. Hope this helps...

Thanks for the info Scoota gal, though from your avatar, looks like you should upgrade your username to biker gal! I have a yellow 748 myself, quite fond of the Dukes.

Gave my machine a de-scale yesterday, and took it apart and removed all the loose beans which had found their way into the nooks and crannies inside. After running several litres of water through it afterwards, I still cant improve much on the taste. Leads me to think:

                              a. my new beans arent as fresh as I thought (no roasting date on pack, so quite possible)
                              b. despite cleaning my machine, it still has some gunk in it.
                              c. my technique needs improvement, or
                              d. thats just the way those Ethiopian beans taste.

Theres not a lot of bite to the taste like I was hoping. Its a little dull, not sure how else to describe it. Luckily Im not expecting coffee nirvana straight away - the journey begins...

Hmm...sounds like youre running a semi auto? If so, you might have to make a manual adjustment to the grind settings. Go down to the machine forums and see if you cant find some more info there on getting the best out of your type of machine. There might not be many threads but possibly enough to help you get the best out of it.

On some other forums, I have Duchess for a name...as in Duchess and the Duke... 8-) But Ive had Scoota Gal here for so long, that I wouldnt change it. Still have the scooter but not for much longer as I dont ride it much if at all anymore. 748 eh? Nice.
