  • Oh the shame of it...

I completely forgot about this until last night... In my pre-snob days, my younger sister did a bit of modelling/extra work, and scored an extras role in a commercial. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hMVSxAQe6tA

Its a NESCAFE ad. :-[ Oh the shame she has brought on the family! ;D ;D ;D

PS. Shes NOT the semi-naked mermaid!

          "nest pas du café"
          "nest pas café"
          "nest café"

still not quite "nescafé" though. At least not the way we understand it

Another one of those things the marketers missed maybe?

Probably not though as its just short for Nestlé café.
Funny though as Nestlé is Swiss and they speak French.

I love hearing of stories where the Marketers completely miss the point with a product name - eg: how the Chevy "Nova" translates into "doesnt go" in Spanish.

Yep, thats why theyre paid the big bucks

Ive heard that Pajero translates as wanker in Spanish, although it could be another one of those pesky-but-funny urban myths.

Re: Oh the shame of it...

Ben Elton wrote a very good sendup of this kind of thing in Gridlock.
Ive not been able to find the complete passage on Google, but it went something like:

Global Motors were launching a new model. They wanted a European style name so they asked the marketing firm to get European countries to name it.

Country A wanted the "Capri", but country B wanted something else, country C wanted a different thing again and so a compromise was reached with "Crappee".(Note - I recall the detail of exactly how they arrived at this name was very well explained by Mr. Elton. Ill try and look it up over the weekend.)

The Germans would have preferred "Krappee" but eventually agreed. No-one was concerned about the English conotations of naming the model after sh1t.
