Thanks, Cindy, we too are pleased to "have made it" without incurring, occasioning or initiating any road-rage!!
having a behemoth like ours traversing the city traffic at 40km per hour surely must have upset some people...
but, nobody "let on", if that was the case!

the truckies on the Sturt highway.. another matter altogether...
that was a bit like the old nursery song: some (most, actually!!) were realy really good, and some were horrid!

Luckily Rob is good at keeping his cool

Rob is one of the most laid back relaxed people I have met. Nothing seems to faze him.

There is beauty in every corner of this wide country of ours:
the evening sky above the plains around Benalla....

Thanks Dennis.... but in this case it was more like: "avond-rood, regen in de boot:, which means: "red evening sky brings rain"... and it did!
it has been gently raining all night and the sounds of the kurrawongs coming down from the mountain is wonderful to hear.
the sulphur crested cockies are screeching in the pine trees...and it is great to see the valley shrouded in fog!!

i really hope other parts of the country got some rain as well....

              Hi Lizzi,

We have really enjoyed reading of your trip around Auss. We have visited many of the areas you have shared with us. The photos bought back many memories. Thank you for sharing them with us.

We will be off to Tassie on Jan 1 on the SPOT for 2 weeks. This will be our 8th visit. We love that place. Some very good coffee places there and some not so good. Enjoy your trip there also.

Kind Regards from Herbie and the Missus living and working on an irrigation???? dairyfarm in the dry and drought stricken Southern Riverina of NSW.

                  Heya Herbie....
thank you for your comments... it is always a bit dicey sharing pics with other people... like most of our generation i have memories of slide-evenings at the neighbours!!

yes, we consider ourselves lucky that we have had the chance to travel/live/learn/experience this way: it has made us much more aware of how/where the rest of the country lives.
the trip from Mildura to Albury via Swan Hill (i gave you a distant wave, Herbie !! ) was an eye-opener in regards to the drought; to see the orchards full of dying trees and the deserted farmhouses and the dry, dusty paddocks was heart-rending.
you and the Missus must be really wondering if it is ever going to rain and you will be able to see those waterwheels turn again!

being back here is an interesting experience, more so because we havent lived in the house for 7 years and it has all the hallmarks of tenancy.
it certainly is not "home" anymore... and we long to be able to slap the "sold" sticker on the for-sale sign out the front!

opening the rumpus-room and seeing the mountain of work in front of us was sobering... we started Friday morning around 11, and had our first garage sale on Sunday.... a BIG garage sale, and that was just from the stuff in the shed and the first metre of stuff in the rumpus-room.
this morning the first skip went to the tip, and the second skip is sitting on the verge, waiting to be collected.
the first trailer load of steel has also gone to the steel-merchants, and Rob has started on the books... so far he has 5 boxes ready to go, 1/2 box to keep and he has only done 1/4 of the "book-wall" in the rumpus-room...

we are justabout getting to the furniture we want to keep, and it is great to see those old familiar pieces back, even if it is for a short time.
after the next BIG garage sale coming Saturday we should have pared the original 48 CuM of furniture and 20 CuM of shed stuff down to a manageable 20CM total... i live in hope!!

in the meantime, the bus (and therefore , at night, us... :P) sits in the caravan park, which is right under the main flightpath for the Albury airport AND right next to the showgrounds, where the (very big and noisy : ) Albury show will start on Wednesday!
                  Jeepers, I miss the Nullabor.....

actually, Robusto, the slow cavalcade was in Adelaide... a Victorian bus, with WA trailer on which sat a Victorian car.... and then my (as yet unregistered, but on a permit to drive it to Victoria!) jalopy towing a WA trailer on which sat a Victorian motor-bike...
i am sure the Adelaide people didnt mind us being in their way: they were too busy trying to make sense of the convoy... ;D ;D

                    • Re: coffee on the road

thought a little update might be in order, just in case you thought we had abandoned the "Cocky" in favour of "land-locked " living...

we are (still...) in Albury, on site at a local caravan park,  having spent the last few weeks "head down, bum up" doing what was necessary to clean up/out the house (which is for sale) and rumpus-room/garage (which was full of our furniture and "shed-shit"...)

we have had 2 very big weeks at the house: 3 garage-sales over 2 weekends, got rid of 3 skips full of rubbish/rubbishy stuff, used 200 m : of bubble wrap to pack the remaining 20 cubic metre of "possessions" and then, right in the middle of it, Rob was offered a full-time job for three months... as skip-truck driver!! ;D ;D

that caused quite a change of plans, as we initially aimed at staying here only for the "house" stuff and de-camp to Glenrowan as soon as we could, leaving the "big smoke" behind us in favour of the bush and serenity...
well, that  wasnt to be, as Robs work-depot is literally 400m from our current caravan-park site and a simple calculation priced  the preferred site at Glenrowan out of the equation: time travelled, fuel costs as well as higher park-rates made the decision quite clear: we stay in Albury

so, here we are, for the next 3, no 2 1/2 months... Rob is working almost 10 hours per day, summer has set in with a vengeance, and Albury is showing us the side of her we liked least when we lived here: blimmin hot, bone-dry  and eye-watering dusty.
we have had to resort to curtaining the back 3/4 of the bus off from the front, so the aircon has a fighting chance in the 39 degree heat.. and now the dogs and i are able to spend our days in relative comfort, although it takes a bit of doing to get the bedroom to a bearable temperature in the evening
sitting outside is not really a viable alternative after 8AM, between the fly plague and the heat... even when i went for my walk this morning at 0530, the flies were already so thick (and veeeery sticky!) i had to put on my sunnies to protect my eyes... bit odd-looking in the half-dark of the early morning!!

in the meantime there was the stuff we promised to do at our daughters house, both for her renovation as well for our future storage of our furniture...another 2 very big weekends, 5 skips ( 3 with stuff/timber/rubbish, 2 with concrete...ouch!!) and 1 trailer-load of steel ...
last weekend was  very hot, and between the three of  us we drank about 40 litres of mineral water, water , weak cordial, and yes, ill admit to a few cokes here and there (diluted with mineral water...)
i dont think i have perspired so much... ever!!
poor Rob... he is going to work just to get a rest!!

but, there is light at the end of the tunnel, the storage of our furniture about half completed (1 small truck-load to go) and i think Rob is  hoping to take time out  for a ride this weekend... in between his cat-nap in the mornings and dog-nap in the afternoons!

we have set 1st of February as his cut-off date for work, and aim to leave for Melbourne a few days later.
that would give us about a week or so before catching the boat to Tassie, ready for the next stage of our travels.

                      cant wait....

Great update, Lizzi. That part of inland Australia certainly gets hot, but there are worse places to spend a summer than Albury . Robs income should replenish your finances so you can spend up with gay abandon. Er, impunity.

And, unlike most of the rest of us... after three months we are still anchored wherever we are...you get to take off to wonderful Tasmania.

                          Sounds good.

Mal, there is no shame in having put down roots  ... i sometimes really envy people who live in a close-knit community; history, tradition, familiarity, family, close friends, cake-stalls, working bees...
Rob has been more sedate, but i  have moved house 12 times in the 25 years before coming out to Australia, and  6 times since, not counting the 7 years "on the road" ; no tap-, aerial- or even hair-roots for me! ;D ;D

Robusto, i agree there are much worse places to be... and i am sure i will feel better once i am able to get my rings, belt and shoes back on!!  ;D ;D ;D
i am not really complaining, though...Rob ( together with a lot  of other people) is working out in the heat!!
however, this sardine can can get a little claustrophobic when it is 39 degrees-plus outside...

to be honest, we had looked forward to our bush stay in Glenrowan; the caravan park there  is in a lovely setting, with fantastic views.
the Warby ranges are so beautiful, the vista over the valley across to Mt Buffalo spectacular!!

and, you are correct, we are really looking forward to our Tassie adventure, with, yes, a few extra things (and some new beans!!) on board, courtesy of the extra income!

Sammy, Albury can stay hot for weeks, and then surprise you with snow on the mountains for Christmas!
i am sure the beautiful NE of Victoria and the landscape around Albury will have something nice to offer you during your stay here!
looking forward to catching up with you!

                              L

PS: Whoohoo.. just heard the weather forecast: 25 degrees and rain!!!

Yes, a cool change..... weve had the air conditioner on the last few days...and with a forecast 19 tomorrow (dont you love Melbourne---if you dont like the weather, wait 15 minutes) well probably have to switch the thermostat back to heat!

But back to Albury.... undoubtedly there will be trips down to Mount Beauty and the bakery there for a coffee and cake.... Falls Creek, Bright--- its all in your boundless backyard.
