Just wanted to know what your favorite coffee shops are,
and what type of coffee you drink.

    (sorry, its my home.)

Not trying to be a smart-a%@e (and certainly not saying I make the best around), but since getting fully into home coffee (as opposed to years of playing with below par machines, beans, etc) I find it very hard to find a good cafe brew. I prefer home roasted (or quality roasted such as Bean Bay brown, as Im still trying to perfect home roasting), ground and brewed coffee now.

Most coffees I get in cafes disappoint - franchises and one-offs - and my wife (upon whose feedback I judge my efforts) feels the same. I know there are some good cafes out there and some CSers have cafes which would be worth a crack, but I think 90% of coffee shops (in my area) are still below acceptable. (Had an absolute shocker on the weekend from a cefe which I previously rated as OK.)

When you say "type" of coffee, do you mean brand name (there are lots of good roasters out there, including Andys Bean Bay - steer clear of larger, mass produced names) or style of coffee (macchiato or latte or espresso or flat white - its all good for me ).

As far as coffee shops go, youre in a fairly broad geographic site here (see www). There are threads here on various cities / towns, which may narrow down the search a bit.

    Cheers.

      Like GregJW,
I am strating to get very fussy, as are the friends who visit cindys cafe on a regular basis.

We are supposed to be going out to a cafe that has great atmosphere but not so good coffee tonight with a friend who I regularly supply with beans (he said the coffee isnt good compared with mine) but it will be nice just to go out. I will probably have a cup of tea.

        Hi Greg,

I know exactly what you mean; On recent trips to Melbourne and Sydney (last w/end) I can say without doubt that 99% of retail coffee is below what I consider acceptable.

There is a take it or leave it attitude and the skill level of some so called baristas is questionable.

I have also found that some of the coffee outlets that are well known to the CS site also fall into the trap of catering and providing more for the "average" consumer at the expense of a quality product.

I loved the idea behind St Ali in Melbourne and Veneziano was definitely a fave. Both for two different reasons, though I could probably tire a bit of St Ali as its kind of loudish/funky/lounge/lots of bass type music was driving me a bit to distraction there. Whereas Veneziano didnt have loudish/funky/lounge/lotsofbass type music to drive me out. In fact, I found it a lot more quiet and quite relaxing to be there in comparision.

I think the best cafe Ive really ever been to, well, its more of a resturant but to me it epitomises what a cafe/resturant should be. And thats a rather small but well established resturant that overlooks the Noosa river at Noosaville. It doesnt have seating for a great amount of people but it does have heaps of atmosphere along with fantastic food and a terrific host.

My favourite coffee is from my Silvia and home roasted beans but when I go out specially for a coffee I go to one of the new breed of cafes appearing in Perth who take pride in their product not some of the cr....p that is served in 95% of establishments around our fair city.
Epic in West Perth, T5 in Joondalup, Tiger Tiger in city are a few................

I like the Dolcé in oatley, sydney they have the best ice-coffee ive tasted so far. but Scootz coffee is the best coffee, so i spose it counts as home coffee.

mmmm, Oomph when Im back in home in Tassie, but over in the Queenstown (NZ) Vudu or Leonardos. Bias towards Leos as its where I work, our own roast is one of the best ive tasted.

Oh and Cap before lunch machiato anytime after. Cant handle that much milk after 11ish :S The people that come in an order 2-3 latte bowls with their lunch make me cringe a little.

                    Hi Harlen Coffee Kid,

Im from NSW too, and my fav cafs in Sydney are Muse (Summer Hill -- thats twice tonight Ive recommended it -- they should pay me!), Well Connected (Glebe), Campos (when not too crowded, which is always! Newtown), Newscaf (Newtown) and Tobys Estate (Woolloomooloo). What I like about most of em is the cosy woody nookie feel and the strong -- not bitter! -- rich coffee.
I usually order a FW, but that usually comes with latte art, so my drink could be a FW/Latte. Many cafs and coffee carts I encounter dont make a distinction between a FW, Latte or Cap. In fact, they texture the milk for them all in the same jug and pour the three drinks, calling one a FW, the next a Latte and just adding a little choc powder to the third to call it a Cap.
I actually prefer my FW to be done this way -- as I like a stronger coffee than a traditional Latte, but I like my Latte art. I get a real shock when I go to a cafe that does real Flat Whites: some silky foam milk on top of flat hot milk and no effort for a nice pattern on top.
So, I guess my real drink is a Bogus FW Latte hybrid (with extra shot).

Generally fws are served in a cup, cafe lattes are served in a glass and theyre the same drink...if you want "silky foam milk on top of flat hot milk" im sure it wouldnt be too hard to find a cafe thatll serve you hot, split milk.

HI I like St Ali in sth melbourne and in my local area( werribee) there is a relatively new cafe in Watton st that serves Veneziano coffee so far they make a good drop.
But you cant beat the complements you get from people coming over and saying how tasty your coffee is.
My favourite coffee is a latte
