Probably a good kit to get started on, just in case it turns out its not what you thought it would be. Doing away with the Tail-Rotor and incorporating Counter-Rotating Rotor-Blades will definitely make it easier to point it were you want it to go.....

    Re: Remote Control Helicopters

Ive been bitten by the RC Helicopter bug of late. I bought one of the micro two channel choppers and kind of broke it. I ended up buying a Blade CX2. Its a 4 channel chopper, and if I can fly it (sort of) then anybody can.
I bought mine from a local hobby shop (LHS) but if you a willing to chance an internet purchase, lower prices can be had.

For example this helicopter is very similar to the one I bought, but for less than half of what I paid: http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.4109

These type of choppers arent that happy flying outside unless there is little or no wind. If youve got access to a large indoor space that would be the best option.

One warning... lots of upgrades possible

You only need 4 channels, more channels than this are only used for various accessories on board the chopper/fixed wing.

Channel assignments are (in no particular order)...
    Throttle
    Collective
    Cyclic, and
    Tail Rotor.

I heartily recommend the Walkera 4 channel jobbies. I gave one to my twin as a birthday present and hes enjoying a second childhood (albeit a harder to fly one)

Its best to use a dedicated chopper radio set as they often allow you to Mix the channels to simplify flight control when you are first starting out. Your local R/C club gurus will fill you in on all of these details Im sure. All the best mate and have fun ,

    Cheers,

    Thanks Guys

Yep Im a real newb (pretty much like my barista capabilities  :P)  Its a great suggestion from you all to look into a flying club as I hear helis can be tough to get the hang of.

A couple of people recommended a 4-channel to hone my skills instead of jumping into a 6-channel beast!

Anyhow...thanks again!  Ill let you know how Im progressing once Ive got one!  8-)

You could always get an RC Extra 300 instead of a helicopter. Ive seen blokes who could get them to hover like a helicopter!

I agree, if you are jumping straight into helis you are in for a lot of crashes. Ive been flying RC gliders and planes for years and the few tries Ive had on the helis left me rather frustrated and embarassed. Id suggest contacting a rc flying club.

    Re: Remote Control Helicopters

Are you talking about the little ones that appeared everywhere just before Christmas for $10 - $40?

These are good novelty fun for indoors and calm conditions, but very basic. I have a cheap one from Daily Deals that my daughter loves watching. Easy to fly and fairly bullet proof.

If you mean the real ones with proper RC units and many controls, then seek out an RC flying club in your area and see if you can go along to a meeting. These are a lot harder to fly and a lot more expensive. They are also non bullet proof and the most expensive part always seems to break when you have a hard or uncontrolled landing. (Some unkind people might call it a crash).

Can you already fly fixed wing RC? If not, going straight to helis could be ambitious.

    HTH.

    Brett.
