    Ah m@,

It has been some time since Ive looked at Apple computers (and it shows :).....

Well that is sad, and IMHO removes their main competitive edge. They HAD superb graphics.... anyone doing graphic design or photo shopping would swear by Apple - and for very good reason.

Their graphics capability using the 68XXX processor some years ago was better than most PCs of today.... and try to get someone using a Mac for graphics to swap to an IBM.... forget it!!!

I guess computers are a bit like cars these days..... you buy a particular make more for the badge than whats under the bonnet - most are much of a muchness in that department (and looks as well..... todays vehicles have lost their personality which made them unique) - and it sounds like Apple have done the same

      Re: Mac Or PC

I used mac many years ago when my employer at the time only used apple. I didnt take to it, preferring the pc - but then I always used to enjoy tinkering with the hardware and software, which the macs werent as amenable to.

These days Im reasonably happy with windows and the pc - although the software and Vista seem so bloated and not as amateur-geek friendly. Too many pop-ups and too hard to find anything on the disks. Still, cant see myself changing. I think you still get a lot more computing power for the dollar with a PC, more flexible configuration, more upgradeable and still more programs written for it.

I started out my programming days working on Apples, and also at Uni (where Apple and Uni still ruled academia). Have PC at home running multiple OSes running Windows XP and Server 2003, RedHat Linux and Solaris x86 Unix... but main use has been Windows.

The Macbook Pro and OS X is sweeeet. With the new Intel chips you get the best of both worlds. My brother just bought one and I cant wait to have a play.

Actually, between my wife and I, we stilly have an original Apple IIe and Apple IIc sitting in our storeroom

I used PCs in my work environment for many years. No problem as long as you have an IT dept. to continually fight the viruses etc.

When I retired I invested in a Mac desk top. Much tidier to look at, the processor built into the screen, no other hardware cluttering the desk or floor. Built in mic and camara - great for Skype. The major benefit has been the total absence of viruses. Not-a-one in over two years now.

One thing you do need with a Mac is MS Word and Excel software. Most folks use MS, therefore it makes sense to have compatible software.

The Mac internet browser (Safari) is a dream. All in all, I love my Mac.

            Re: Mac Or PC

Macs are great -but I still think PCs are the go. Theyre cheap, easily upgradable and buildable and if you look after them (good virus checkers and maintenance) then theyre great. Of course badly written applications and badly written OSs kinda let the whole thing down!!

Aside from the fact that it take 1.5GB of RAM just sitting there, I havent had any issues with Vista so long as I keep enough Ram up to it!

              Re: Mac Or PC

We had an Apple IIC many, many moons ago and it was a great little unit, particularly with our kids when they were small.

I had access to mainframes and minis at this time via my employer, so didnt really need to play around with home computers all that much until I decided to build a couple from scratch, which was fun. Eventually went the way of PCs though and still use them today at home. Have no intention of going the Vista route though.

Currently use Linux for 90-95% of what I need a PC for and WinXP Pro for anything that I cant find an equivalent programme to run in Linux. Its a great option these days, lots of great distributions to be found, most of them free and others that are very reasonably priced, especially compared to Microsoft. Whats more, theres an absolute plethora of online help available when you need it and thats free too 8-).

What flavour of Linux are you using Mal?

I just installed the latest Ubunut on my laptop and I love it. Have you tried running your windows apps through wine in linux? I currenly have photoshop, dreamweaver and a few others running under linux and it works great. Also I think you can run windows XP under linux with virtualbox virtualization. I am doing a similar thing on my XP machine with VM workstation running ubuntu server under XP.

                  Gday BamBam,

Im using the current version of Kubuntu... Version 8.04 but started out with 6.10. JavaB (Robin) put me on to it a little while ago and I havent looked back, an excellent operating system 8-). Ive played around a bit with Windows Apps running in Wine, VMs, etc mostly out of interest since Ive found there isnt much that cant be done with a Linux App to be found somewhere.... theres about 24,000 of em .

What I particularly enjoy with Linux though, is the speed with which it runs most applications. Equivalent Windows Apps, particularly anything to do with image manipulation, run waaayyy slower for identical process outcomes. All image processing is now completed using Linux Apps and I am very happy with the results. Probably not as good as some genuine Windows Apps where Audio Processing is concerned though. The Linux Apps Ive been able to find for this purpose tend to be a bit convoluted to use and the results are not always as expected, so I tend to stick with Windows for this sort of stuff.

The huge strides that are being made with Ubuntu distributions and Linspire too, are certainly paving the way for people to have genuine o/s alternatives instead of having to remain locked into the very expensive Microsoft route. To say nothing of the issues that keep cropping up with Windows, re: viruses, other malware and the plethora of security holes that always need patching. Linux is a walk in the park to maintain by comparison. Yep, very happy with my Kubuntu , as you can gather...

                  Cheers,
                  Mal.

                    Re: Mac Or PC

Your not wrong about the responsiveness of running apps. I am running the standard version 8.04 with gnome and loving it. When you say audio processing what kind of audio processing do you mean? Because for general playback/ipod integration/podcasts/library management etc. I find that amarok is the best program that I have ever used. In fact I commented to someone the other day that I would use linux just for this app. Also if i want to rip one of my CDs I just use the supplied sound juicer app to export to mp3 (I had to install a library to enable mp3) and then point amarok at it and it does the rest. It really is amazing how it can totally organise your collection at the click of the button.

One of the best things I like about ubuntu is it really does "Just work" out of the box. With windows you are forever searching for that one program to achive this or that. Then it is shareware or crippleware and you have to buy it. Ubuntu seems to have eveything just about covered, and if its not you can count on getting something from the repositories.

BTW I read somewhere that the whole of the Swiss school system was transfering to ubuntu, 9000 schools are uninstalling every copy of windows XP.

Audio file editing, as in mixing, cutting and pasting, effects, etc. Transferring several hundred of my treasured 12" Vinyl over to digital. A labour of love that keeps me occupied

Yep, Amarok is terrific alright...... Much better than WMP or anything else for that matter. Apparently theyre working on porting it across to Windows and if thats successful, I cant imagine anyone wanting to use anything else.

Interesting eh? Theres definitely a ground swell emerging for sure, especially with a significant number of various Govt. departments all over the place starting to opt out of Microsoft and head into Linux. Multi-License use like this isnt usually free though but compared to Microsoft it is a lot more equitable and a lot less to worry about.

                      Cheers,
                      Mal.

That would be unbelievable if they ported amarok to windows.

I was under the impression that ubuntu was free in every circumstance. They maybe paying third parties to install and support it. But I cant imagine that ubuntu is charging for the licences. The most unbelievable part is that you can order a CD of ubuntu from the ubunut site and you dont even have to pay for the shipping, little own the disk.

                        Quote from their website:

                        * Ubuntu will always be free of charge, including enterprise releases and security updates.
                        * Ubuntu comes with full commercial support from Canonical and hundreds of companies around the world.
                        * Ubuntu includes the very best translations and accessibility infrastructure that the free software community has to offer.
                        * Ubuntu CDs contain only free software applications; we encourage you to use free and open source software, improve it and pass it on.

Ubuntu o/ss are free but they do have corporate/commercial arrangements with all sorts of companies and organisations, mainly from the support/maintenance point of view. This page gives you an idea of what I mean but probably badly explained.... :-[
