    Re: Wheres the fun gone???

Yes... I agree! As a noob its a great site - its not many places that can tolerate the same (basic) questions being asked over and over again :P

Its all about "fair go" mate and as always, this cuts both ways...... I love my coffee and anything to do with helping me produce an even better cup. I also love helping others and CoffeeSnobs gives me the opportunity to do both. Couldnt be better as far as Im concerned 8-) [smiley=thumbsup.gif],

        Re: Wheres the fun gone???

I am going to go against the grain and say this place is immensely overmoderated, IMHO it borders more on content editing than moderation and makes me not want to post anything cause I get the vibe anything not within the rules (including pic size) will get jumped on

but thats the rules and I abide by them by choosing to not post much, just how the internet is when you are browsing with somebody elses money

          Re: Wheres the fun gone???

Well, Im going to stick my 2c in here...

IMHO...this site is by far NOT overmoderated.

I moderate on TWO other sites. I participate on six forums frequently.

There are other forums that could use MORE moderation, IMHO.

I am yet to see any of our mods here actually change peoples posts apart from resizing pictures. None of us change what people say...and I WILL stand corrected if you can find me such a post.

Some of you know what goes on behind the scenes of running such a huge forum. Others dont and hence Andys plea recently for some of you to take a decaf and chill...

If you think that moderators participating in conversations is "over moderating" well, theres nothing I can say or do to change your opinion on that.

However, I have been to a forum where I found that there was not enough moderation and the attitude towards a lot of people, especially females was enough to drive me away. The language was just disgusting, IMO, which is incredible considering weve supposedly got over intolerance towards others... : The best power I held in that situation was that I could choose to LEAVE. Which I did!

As a moderator, I will stand on Andy and the teams side. Sorry but that is what loyalty is about to me.

In regards to fun...go to Off Topic. We have LOTS of fun there...(Think the Canberra thread...now that was funny!! ;D )

And in regards to moderating, if this thread continues down the path of "bagging out CS and the moderators"...well, I think you all know what is likely to happen...

So, please, play nice. We dont get paid to look after you children... :P :-*

            Re: Wheres the fun gone???

I moderate a forum and think this one is moderated well.
As Andy said, a bad call can sometimes be made but rarely here I think.

The new Off Topic section should go a long way to venting the need to talk about other things occasionally.

Some things do need more strict policing and I believe the For Sale section is one of them.

I have one section on my site that is very strictly contolled.
Its a record section and I dont allow any editorial whatsoever.
The rest of my forum though is very relaxed and self regulating just like this one.

              Really? :-?

              Youve not been censored.

              Youve been allowed your opinions.

Your take on things has been addressed by a mod.

Youve not been banned from here.

Welcome to the bloody difficulties of enforcing a democratic atmosphere within the free-post nature of a forum ... & what a mod has to deal with.

Its not tyranny, just pragmatism - making a site of almost 5000 members (not necessarily active all at once) workable needs mods mate!

Ill go against your grain, & say this site is moderately moderated compared to other fascist sites.

                Re: Wheres the fun gone???

Ive been posting on forums for 9.5yrs and have been a moderator on one of them (a US forum) for quite a few years now(joined that one in 2000) which currently has 9766 Members and 302,732 posts. Apart from the forum I help moderate,.. this forum is the only other forum I have come across and enjoy so much because IMO it is pretty layed back compared to most of the forums Ive visited over the years. Some forums are so unfriendly they have sub-forums that you cannot even access (you can see all the headings but nup..cant read the information in there because someone has decided the information in those areas cannot be shared to lurkers and other minimal posting folk.. you have to earn the right by contributing first.

Knowing what its like behind the scenes and what it takes to run and moderate a forum, I can say with confidence that CS staff (most/all? of them volunteering their time for free lets not forget)have got the moderation balance right IMO.   None of them are robotic androids as far as I know (though android...andy..there could....nar) so Id be surpised if there wasnt the occasional bad call or three.

Oh and as far as the behaviour of the CS membership... it is outstanding IMO.  I have helped put out some massive fires in the forum I help moderate over the years (while for the most part it is an awesome friendly envronment),.. but there have been people joining just to come in to create conflict for the fun of it and one or two trouble makers who are fine most of the time,.. but occasionally love a good argument and its usually no surprise to the mods,. who was the member that lit the fuse. Things have gotten really nasty, personal and heated at times on that forum, but so far I havent seen anything that even comes close to that here. Not that I have been here that long in the scheme of things to be able to know for sure whether it happens here or not.

Snap! same here. This forum and the other one that I help moderate are the only two that I visit regularly now. The one I help moderate, these days I visit not as much as I used to,..or should perhaps since I discovered CS......CS has stolen my attention a bit )

Of course I always head off to geeky computer forums the minute I need to resolve an issue,.. but Id never visit these type of forums everyday for example.

Jeez... I hope you were kidding with that -

                        1) I thought my comments were more thought provoking than "CS /Mod bagging"!!
                        2) if you are planning on deleting posts in this thread... welcome all to CS 1.1 (the communist version) where all posts are censored to reflect the thoughts of the Mods!! :P

Seriously... this wasnt meant to turn into a slanging match. I was just just a little disappointed at what I thought was some over zealous moderating - which Im more than happy to see as the exception rather than the rule!

                            Fair enough Menace....

The problem is though, you always end up opening the gate for people that have a more polarised view of what "should" be done, according to them and no matter what the original intentions may have been its usually not long before some of these views get posted and the temperature in the thread starts to rise.

Everyones entitled to their own point of view and opinion of course, we dont all live each others lives so its both natural and invigorating to become engrossed in discussions that eke out someone elses inner most thoughts. Its even better when all the participants do their best to put themselves in each others shoes, at least for a little while, as this is then likely to generate a much more interesting discussion from which we can all walk away from, hopefully with some increased level of enlightenment. Its an aim worth striving for I think but difficult to manage....

                            Cheers,
                            Mal.

Sheeze Sunbeamer, its not an attack on you, pic size is a real issue for those on small bandwidth connections. We have plenty of members who are happy using the site on a dial-up modem (and so they should). Those same members dont get much love on you-tube or sites with huge shockwave/flash multi-media menus but can browse around CS without grief.

Large images can be linked to an off-site service or attached to a post as a downloadable ZIP file. Then people have the choice.

We could assume that everyone lives in the city and has a $100 per month "fat internet" connection or we can keep the sizes of images at a reasonable level so they work for all.

                                I like the later.
