  • Re: Barista Venting

    You sound angry Bruce.

The thread is called, barista venting. From all the posts Ive read of Garys, I get the impression he wouldnt hurt a fly.

Maybe Gary was just venting, and not asking for your opinion?

And... not angry in the slightest... merely speaking out for the other side of the coin. My wife is 5 foot nothing and weighs 42 kgs on a humid day and she simply cannot handle too much caffeine... but still enjoys the ritual and sociality of a good cuppa shared with friends. I just happen to think that she has as much right to a short black as anyone else... thats all

        Was just simply venting.

I wouldnt hurt a fly, but ive killed a few coffee beans by taking the roast too far  ;D

Ive re-evaluated my thinking, and come to think of it, this is the 21st century after all.
We have clients who are allergic to nuts, lactose and gluten, not to mention being sensitive to caffeine, smoke etc
The adage of "the customer is always right" holds true, and flexibility is a key in this age of speciality coffee.

Im willing to change to meet the customers requirements in these changing times, but then these same customers are eating chocolates that come with the coffee which contains caffeine and the excess wine they have drunk will have an effect on their sleeping patterns.

Im a espresso lover at heart. I cringe, thus i vent.

Thanks for the insight Re a babycino. I wasnt aware that it was something other than foamed milk! And uncertainly expect to pay for them.

Maybe next time Ill ask for a ristretto for myself and some foamed milk for my son, and come across as a real coffee, erm, Snob!

Not Barista Venting but machine service venting...

To the Sydney firm that pretends they know how to fix and service coffee machines:

                a) You should not use loctite on the thread of a boiler element, and
                b) You should not use teflon tape as an alternative to the correct gasket.

Weve come across this twice recently. Its laborious and costly to make good.

I know you read this forum. Either learn to do the job properly or get out of this line of business.

If you continue this stupid practice Ill out you.

Might be better to take this up with the company directly. I cannot see anything gained by "venting" here but everything to be gained by making process improvemnt suggestions directly.

Sadly, its not that uncommon to see this sort of thing done by professional repairers. There are almost no spots on an espresso machine where use of loctite is a good idea, and it certainly shouldnt be used as an alternative to the correct sealant. I have it in my tool bag, but rarely ever use it. And teflon tape is also a last resort only item - about the only place where its use can ever be justified is to ensure that a threaded fitting without a compression washer or gasket of some sort (like an angled fitting threaded into a boiler, which must point in the correct direction when tight) will tighten up correctly AND point in the correct direction. And when teflon tape is used it is VITAL that it is wrapped onto the thread carefully to ensure that none of the tape will overhang the end of the thread and potentially peel off inside the boiler, pipe or fitting and cause a blockage somewhere.

I had a customer come into work yesterday first thing in the morning and in a thick Russian accent say: "Give me coffee, hot water, milk, and sugar in a cup with a plastic lid to take away and I need it immediately!"

He then went on to try and haggle about the price and demanded 10 sugars in his coffee!

So I said to him, "Listen mate if youre going to behave like an idiot Im going to have to ask you to leave!"

At which point he promptly strode out of the cafe, saying nothing and walked off up the street!

At least i had the good sense to charge him for the coffee first before processing his order - and sure enough he returned 10 minutes later and said, "Give me my coffee."

So I handed him his (if not cold then at least luke warm) coffee and off he went!

WHic reminds me of the time I was managing a restaurant in the city and a stiff in a suit called on of my waitresses a stupid Irish potato picker - and this was one of the politer insults!

So I asked him to leave, and when he wouldnt I threw him out the door ...

Turns out he was a lawyer acting for a former disgruntled employee and he told me he was going to sue the pants off me

To which I replied, "Put it in writing mate!"

And I never heard from him again - at least I had the pleasure of throwing a solicitor out of a restaurant! ;D ;D ;D

20?! That is shocking!! The most I had from a regular was 8 spoons in their TA coffee. I refused to give someone who was clearly on their way to diabetes 8 spoons of sugar. I was so tempted to say, "would you like coffee in your sugar?"

There was also a lady who would forever put 7 sugar sachets in her Americano. She would only take 2 sips of it. You could argue that I made bad coffee, but I dont make bad coffee Sir. And that was what she ordered almost every day for the 4 years I was working there. Whhhyyyy dont you just order a weak long black?! Its cheaper and would save me from the clean up!!

I also vent at all hipster baristas...you know who they are. If you dont then you will after reading this webpage I found. Hipster Barista  ;D

                              Vent over.

A reverse vent, maybe not for the barista but for the person taking my order. If I say doppio... why always assume doppio ristretto when I purely say no not a doppio ristretto just a double shot and yet somehow I still get a ristretto :/ frustrating.
