Re: Any Canon Photo5 competitors out there?

    Hey Flynnaus,

The canon photo5 gallery can be found here:
    http://www.canon.com.au/photo5/gallery/default.aspx

Im not sure how the website works because when i click through the photos the same web address is displayed in the address bar, so i dont know how to link my photo.

So if you want to find it it is in the amateur finalists section of the crayon section. So down the bottom of the page you click on crayon and the default is the amateur finalist part and mine is the second photo there; the photo of the man in a business suit with a yellow crayon in his pocket.

    Cheers,
    -Sanchia

                  Go Sanch!

...still think your ribbon was better than the 10 that made it.

What is the accepted amount of post digital edit? I notice some of the finalists are far more photoshop than photography.

I am very much an amateur Photographer and I am jealous - but voted for you anyway. ;D ;D

I have never worked out how they select winners in these competitions. I have made the finals in a few and never got the top prize. That is life I only take photos between coffees anyway. Best of luck

                      Same here.
Last photo competition I entered I didnt win either.
Even though my pictures were the best.

                      The judging is soooo subjective.

Re: Any Canon Photo5 competitors out there?

Thanks for the comments and votes!!! I really appreciate it! I dont like my chances (the green crayon/tree one seems to be pretty popular as far as I can gather) but im still hoping!

Hey Andy! They allow as much photoshopping as you want, as long as its not totally cgi. There has been a bit of an online debate about that! I didnt do too much photoshopping really. The red wine photo was mostly original and I photoshopped the string out (which was holding the ribbon in place) and the balloon which was in the neck of the bottle (stopping the wine pouring out) and some minor retouching. Yeah I was a bit bummed that the ribbon one didnt make it, but it mustnt have been what they were after. I thought my ribbon one had a better chance than my crayon one (which wasnt really my style especially with the post-processing but I thought Id give it a go).

Yep the judging is really subjective! Theres alot of online whinging about what the judges picked but at the end of the day, 1) art is pretty subjective and 2) its canons competition and theyre going to use the finalists for promo stuff so they call the shots. I think they chose the ones that they did because they are using the images to sell their cameras so if the photos are really photoshopped or look really set-up and dont look like something a mere mortal (!) could take, then it might inhibit them selling e.g. their 450D line to people transitioning from point and shoot to DSLR. That was my thoughts anyway.

This year the competition has been split into an amateur and professional section. Last year there were the same amount of prizes but 10 finalists for each category and then 2 winners. There werent many entrants in the professional category and so the quality of the amateur finalists is sometimes better than the pros (have a look in the pro bubble section; theres a photo of a blue sky with bubbles in it! )

                          Cheers

I didnt know they ran competitions when Box Brownies were around or I would have entered. ;D ;D ;D

Sanch, I thought the bottle and ribbon was pretty dam good and I would also have picked it as a finalist. But then again from my results in competitions I am no judge, and never likely to be.

                              Dont go knocking my Brownie.

Sanchs ribbon one was my favourite.

Damn, I was really hoping to get a new lens

Oh well, maybe next year. I guess it was pretty cool to get in the finals so i should be happy with that!
