  • Dakar - fans?

I love watching the Paris to Dakar and watch it every year.

Last year it was sadly cancelled due to terror threats just prior to the start but its back this year. Still called "Dakar" but its in South America (go figure!).

Still great footage and amazing to watch the racing and scenery although it not quite as good as Africa.

We computer record it and watch 2 or 3 nights at once (without ads). Some amazing camera work, lots of helicopter and in the dirt shots, gob-smacking scenery, colours and alien environments.

    Well worth a look.

Recently watched Charlie Boormans "Road to Dakar" and was quite impressed by it - to the point where Im considering entering a mountain bike adventure race across the Simpson Desert later this year.

I havnt seen Road to Dakar, I should.

Charlie is great though I was given his new book for Christmas, "By Any Means" which is a good read.

Mountain bike across the Simpson Desert? You can keep that!

I did the Gibson desert Gunbarrel abandoned route on an XT600 many years ago, having ridden an off road bike for the first time that month. Ran out of time and energy to come back via the Simpson, which I now wish I had done. On a mountain bike = crazy madman!

Love the Dakar too. Those MotoGP lot are wimps. Standing up at over 150km/h with the front wheel just skimming the tops of the undulations. Off road I wobble along like a girl. I think its like the Tour de France though, to track it properly youve got to devote a large number of straight hours to it for the duration.

Didnt like the Boorman/McGregor Long Way books, so havent looked a the By Any Means one. Poorly written and too saccharine, but that may just have been McGregors influence of course (the McCartney of the two?).

I like to see those Porches bounce off the sand an keep on going

            On an unrelated note
I remember the winner of I think 1971 London to Sydney rally where a Hillman Hunter won that year
I went out and bought one (used) : crazy me

Female fan here - mainly for the bikes: I was so devasted when Andy C died a couple of years ago! This year Im watching a bike boy by the name of Schwartz avidly in the hopes that hell get to the stage where Andy C was.

I also love The Long Way Down, The Long Way Round and the Race to Dakar (own all three) and am justing hanging on for By Any Means to come out on video. I just love the interplay between Charlie and Ewan to the extent where I was quite put out that Eve jumped in on the action on the Long Way Down...boo hiss! >

Apparently By Any Means is going to be on Nat Geo from next week (20th, I think), so guess what Im going to be doing on Tuessday night next week!

I only wish SBS would extend it to showing for an hour, though - it never seems to me as though 30 minutes is enough to get a real feel for it. Even Foxtels coverage isnt enough to get the (ptoooey) Sports Channels switched on to watch it.

I could probably just download it from the website, but I chew up most of my monthly limit on this site and my Tap Dancing site and downloading information & YouTube vids, etc that get pointed out.

Yes and they drove like a tank (with apologies to Minx lovers).

I dont know what you mean by that.
Mine could do 100mph (160kph) with four blokes in it and the boot fully loaded.

                        :P

Come to think of it, the last time was down a hill with a sharp bend approaching; I asked the passengers if they wanted me to hit the ton or take the corner and they all screamed as one, "take the corner, take the corner!".....I did both.

                              Come over Darling.

Loved the old bench seats when polished...

Going to the drive in there was always plenty of space between the driver and passenger.. By the time it came to go home you could hardly manage the column shift cause they were right there.. The old Citron was a real pain with the gears out of the dash..
