[ That is very dangerous regardless of how well you think you can fly.
Do you know of a Trial Introductory Flight? I have taken one in a fixed wing and a helicopter - not with my friend - a paid business transaction. The whole point of these is to let you take the controls and have a go (in the hope of gaining your interest in pursuing your licence). This is the exact thing my friend does, with instructor rating. You will find these available with any flight school. If your friends were instructors they would have done them! Approved and openly advertised everywhere. I would suggest not dangerous at all.

To cause a person to blackout you are pulling some very serious Gs...
Ummmmm.....I got taken a bit too literally here. He does not black out and we do not exceed the ratings of the airframe (I would be passed out before this, and before my friend who handles Gs better than me.) The inverted commas were to suggest not really blacked out...just getting me to fly...like the TIF I mention above.

Sorry for confusion here...I would never allow him to do something that left me in total control without him ready to take over! I know the value of experience in everything I do. Knowledge is never enough!

Travis...not as dangerous as you think I am.

My friends, collegues and husband are all highly skilled aerial agricultural pilots. Hence why they would not have done that sort of thing! Instructing is not something these guys even consider as a career path! All they want to do is fly and not get told what to do. Though there have certainly been plenty of times when they have allowed me to put my hands and feet on the controls, without them "blacking out"!

Personally, Ive flown in a few GA aircraft over the years, including an RV4 (our company runabout plane), a motorglider, various other gliders, Jetrangers, Hueys, Eurocopters, Beechcraft, Cessnas, the list gets boring after that... ;D

And cant help myself here but must brag...

An F-111 pilot once said to my husband about his respect of ag pilots. His opinion was that they had to have a pretty big ego to get into a plane and fly it at 250 km/hr, 10 feet above the ground. Which, considering these guys used to fly over us at about 500 feet and travelling at ludicrous speed, is high praise indeed!

Anyhoo...Ive got plenty of aviation tales I could tell...should write a book actually...

Like the classic tale of my man scaling a tree in the middle of some of the most inaccessible terrain in the country to tie a few ropes around a glider that had crashed 60 foot up in it. They then lowered the glider to the ground, dismantled it, waited for a friend in a Jetranger who then did two sling loads getting the glider out to where they could put it in a trailer and take it away...all for the cost of a carton of beer and some jetfuel...

Hey Linda! Didnt know you guys were into aviation too! Gee, I imagine that the next time we get together it will be over coffee talking about planes! ;D

If you ever feel like a trip somewhere, consider coming up here! Plenty of good all weather strips and I know a really nice hangar for your plane that youd be welcome to!

          Re: Snobs with Wings.....

          Hi scoota gal,

sounds very interesting indeed! Gliders are something I still havent experienced but am keen to...the silence must be eerie.

I didnt realise when I wrote it that the instructor quote might sound arrogant...I really didnt mean it that way, meant it as factual that the people you know probably have done TIFs!

Yes, I have great respect for the ag pilots too from many stories I have read and heard when hanging around airports.

What happens with my friend and I is exactly what you describe your husband and friends do...remember my friend does not blackout at all...it was a figure of speech that I didnt communicate well. My friend is always on the ball ready to take control, and he trusts I will not make any abrupt moves as I know better than this.

Surely this is how experience is gained in risky activities. I am not a qualified doctor yet, let alone surgeon...and yet I make incisions, throw stitches, and be first assistant to surgeons regularly in theatre (hands in cavities cutting and clamping whatever surgeon tells me to). Anaesthetists have me intubate low risk patients...etc. Because I need the experience by the time I get there, and they have the experience to watch over me and ensure the patient is safe at all times. If I am only tested on knowledge then lookout my first patients!

Is this not the same with flying? One must fly the plane for the first time at some point!...with no experience. Surely this should happen as early in their training as possible with the guidance and overall control of the experienced pilot.

Regarding the low flying...have you watched much aviation footage on youtube? I saw some amazing footage of French fighter jet pilots over the sea at what looked like 10ft max! They are leaving a wake in the water! Crazy stuff.

Love to read that book someday .

Yes, the friend who owns the motorglider is a fantastic instructor, Travis. Hes a school teacher by trade but has the most unreal way of describing how to hold the attitude of the plane, what youre about to do next etc etc...

In comparison with my husband who used to say...

"Hold the stick, Scoota whilst I fold this map." ;D :

I actually have an entire dvd of Aerial Ag flying...some short videos that were filmed in this country for the annual conference that is held for ag aviation. Its a most requested copy and I know some men who even after a long day in the seat will still come home and watch it! : As if doing it all day wasnt enough...

I think that some of them are on youtube and if theyre not, go to fieldair.com.au and you can find some more of them there as well.

              Hey Travis,

go do the gliding thing it is well worth it for the experience (apart from being cheaper) compared to ultralights or GA. Camden would be about your nearest field unless there is gliders down your way? I have done about 10 hours stick time over the years in gliders and it was worth every $

Dont believe so. Only glider at my airport I have seen was for a special event.

Camden to the North, or Nowra to the South are the options I know of.

I really suck at flying the gliders on flight sim in terms of staying up a long time. Is it easier (I dont mean easy) when you actually have the feeling of lift, and the wind and thermals around you instead of trying to ascertain it from the instruments and screen? Note I do use force feedback controls.

                  Snap at 18.12

Trying to keep a full sized glider in a thermal and flying smooth is hard work unless you are used to it due to not having a motor to haul you around. Done properly it is a creative and mental process of visualising and feeling the air more than a more mechanical process of powered flying. Please dont flame me power junkies [smiley=engel017.gif]

I find it much easier to thermal R/C (apart from having thousands of hours up) gliders as you have a visual reference of if you are going up and how strong the relative air is on different sides of a thermal turn.

I would have thought one for your stomach... which gives you a sinking feeling as you hit a downburst on final just before landing ..... and something to generate that "keep the teeth clenched" feeling when you are flying in real turbulence!

                        Ahhh,

Bring it on JB. Love that sort of flying. It was pretty much standard fare in PNG and a lot of fun... Not for everyone mind you :

Are they still gliding at Nowra? I thought that theyd shut down the Navy gliding club years ago. My man used to fly the Piper Cub that they used to tow the gliders and long story short, met his boss to be in the flying game. Spent many boring, cold, windy and overcast days sitting on the side of that strip! Actually, even watched in horror from the back seat of the Cub one day as the Navy bases chief officer prop started the plane for us! I was praying darn hard that Mark didnt run over him, I can tell you!

Camden would be the best bet for gliders these days Id guess. There are a few there, including one that got rescued out of a tree... ;D (its not flying tho)..and Oakdale might be another strip that is used. At least, Im sure that is where my friend has his motorglider.

We should get together soon Taz! Lol...talk about something else other than coffee!! ;D

We actually flew over your part of the world Melbourne cup weekend last year, heading up to Bundaberg for the Jabs first long maiden voyage....geez there is some fantastic looking scenery up that way. Very dry though. We were quite surprised how dry it actually is.

We will be making a few trips up that way again soon. I will take you up on that offer!

I wish! I love turbulence in a small plane...really know you are flying. One of my best was in a little 172 where it felt like we were falling off a cliff only to be suddenly rocketed back up...heaps of fun. Different story for a downburst on landing though :-/.

Well, I thought Id add a pic. This is one that I took as I was doing a Flickr challenge group and needed to do a "character portrait". So, I got my son to model in his dads gear, so its also turned out as a bit of a nice tribute for him too. Ive got some more that Ill share with you later but thought that this would be a good one to start with! Enjoy...
