    Re: Snobs with Wings.....

Those crop duster pilots are awesome. I have a high respect for what they do. At Ballarat there is a guy who does practice runs up and down the runway and it is a sight to behold! The figure 8 moves they do and the high banking turns are just fantastic.

Travis...uhm turbulence...not my cup of tea. I dont even like it in a big aircraft. When you get it in the Jab, it sort of is a little unnerving. You can feel a rise or a drop of 500ft in it.

We landed at Dubbo airport in 30knt gusting in 32* heat and it was not nice...No lift and the plane didnt want to come down.

Those pilots would be highly insulted to hear you call them crop dusters, Linda... We dont "dust crops" any more...they get sprayed!

It would most likely be a test pilot for Field Air youre watching, seeing as that is where they are based. They are the Australian agent for Air Tractors and theyd be testing the ones theyve put together after being shipped over from the US.

Im not the biggest fan of hairy landings, but as long as were up high...love a thrill! Turbulence up high doesnt worry me at all but hairy landings will always raise the blood pressure for me I think!

                Linda,

How much leg room is in that plane? compared to say a Commodore or similar sedan? And does it have one of those parachutes in the tail?

                Thx

                    Re: Snobs with Wings.....

Is that it with the "snobs with wings"? I did my undergraduate in Civil Aviation and mostly flying Cessnas.  Had my commercial licence (that was over 15 years ago) but have not renewed it since as at the time there was a lull in jobs for pilots. Unfortunately I didnt have the determination as my bro-in law has to tough it out.  He started his career only 6 years ago but unlike me he kept at it despite the financial burden.  Hes currently being paid to be an instructor to Cathay Pacific cadets with a job in Cathay Pacific after his contract.

I also have plenty of tales to tell of trainee pilots landing on taxi ways, single prop. engines catching on fire, Pan Pan calls (no may days thankfully and this was a flight I chose as a back seat observer), and personally the loss of pressure and use of all gyroscopic instruments mid-flight on my first ever solo navigation flight.  Its a colourful career aviation.  Never a dull moment.  I still fly, but now I sit at the back of the plane and get paid to fly all over the world to negotiate contracts with suppliers.

Hardly! ;D I could rabbit on for hours about aviation.

Actually, since my last post in this thread, Ive gone on to gain my Aviation Radio Operator and Aviation Base Operator qualifications with the Rural Fire Service. My goal is to get to Air Base Manager.

In the past 12 months Ive spent some time doing flight following for the flyboys whove been resupplying various towns due to floods. Only just last month, I was up in Moree, sitting in my natural environment, enjoying the comings and goings of several Jetrangers, a BK117 and a beautiful Dauphine...whilst there, got to see a small jet trainer land, it was a L39 Albatross...had us all out taking photos!

The things a google search will turn up.

I was searching for a picture of the Piper Cub that the Nowra RAN Glider Club used to fly and amongst actually finding a great photo someone had taken, I also was led back to this thread!

So for the record...here is the Piper Cub my husband used to pilot and as I was having a bit of a read back through his logbooks, I saw that it was also the first aircraft I flew in with him as he'd recorded the day and date when we'd gone down to Nowra to fly. My name was in the logbook as "other crew". That was way back in April of 1990.

I know to the layman that this looks small...but I never had any qualms about jumping in behind him and doing 11 launches that day. Whilst I had certainly done some time flying in RPT's, this was my first experience in something that was this size!
