  • Dry and cracked hands from the heat and coffee; help!

It seems normal moisturisers and exfoliating stones arent doing the job too well for my hands.

Ive got cracked dark lines all over both of my hands and no matter how clean my skin really is, it just looks and feels dirty from hours and hours on end with the grinder and machine. Does anyone have any secret remedy or lotion you can buy to help your skin just a little?

I suffered from this last year, bugger it hurts when you get cracks on your thumbs (pushing on the tamper is hell). Few ideas moisturise after washing your hands, the soap dries them out. Also there is a product called "tough hands" (or something like it) I got from the pharmacy, expensive (ie $15) but it is good stuff. Use it regularly and you will see a difference. Mine took a while to toughen up but now they are fine.

I also remember a bloke who used to lay concrete tell me that he used to soak his hands in baby oil for about 5 mins every night when he got home and that prevented the same thing.

I have had some surgery whereby I no longer sweat from my hands at all. I use a combination of different moisturisers on rotation.

The best I have come across is 100% shea butter. Very difficult to source...beware claims of 100% but then also have other ingredients???? Also beware contaminants (heavy metals etc) - check for quality control measurements. My sister imports it from Africa and the US because she needs it for her daughter who has a dermatological condition and cannot find a true 100% shea butter in Aus that is also top grade (many different grades) and tested for contaminants. It is a hard butter - you put a dab in your palm and work it between your palms until it turns into a thin oil and then apply.

As moto coffee mentioned above - soaking in baby oil or olive oil is also very good.

The soaps you use will also have a big effect. I only use handmade soaps (again my sister has to make them for her daughter so I get her to make me some extra) which are mainly made from shea butter and other oils.

I could ask my sis if she is willing to onsell a small tub of shea butter for you if you wish to try it. I believe it is expensive per tub but it lasts forever...you only use a small dab each time. Not sure how much $ exactly, my sis often gifts it to me or swap for coffee etc. PM me if interested.

Otherwise I recommend the oils, using a moisturiser instead of soap in the shower and try rotating moisturisers throughout the day.

      Travis.

I know what youre talking about too, Robstar. I get it occasionally as well along the edge of my fingers.

I was also going to suggest an olive oil product, I use a moisturiser with olive oil in it. Seems to do the job for me. Also, like the others have suggested, dont wash with soap and if you can stop washing your hands as much, that will help as well. Only wash your hands if you really need to, just wipe them clean of coffee with a tea towel.

If it gets really bad for you, you might have to consider wearing some of those soft cotton gloves until it clears up again.

I get eczema which ends up very similar to that at times. Best option is to go and see a GP, itll get cleared up in no time with something like Betnovate. If you ae a stubborn guy, like most of us guys, and figure youll fix it yourself, definitely get the cotton gloves. Then get some stuff called Robertsons. Its in a little jar, and not cheap. It also stinks like a dead fish, but it works so damn well! Just before you go to bed, put some of this stuff on your hands where its cracking, slip the gloves on, and by morning it will be noticeably better. Id be surprised if youd need to do this more than 2 or 3 nights, especially if you switch to not using soap to wash your hands. Sorbolene hand wash is a good alternative, as I find using the creams as a hand wash never feels clean enough. And get a good barrier cream to put on your hands before doing stuff, theres one at the chemist in a green and white tube. Hope you get better soon

Sorbolene for all skin washing, showers, shampoo, hands. Use a liquid handwash only for the most stubborn stains.

Then a good moisturiser--often in the early days of a cracking episode. I use the Chem-Care range. Sorbolene for general washing and their NS8 works for real cracks.

I recommend staying away from steroids if all possible.

You could try this. Macro vitamin e cream. So much better than anything else I have tried. Excellent for sunburn too.

Sorbolene for washing in & Pure Nutraceuticals Paw Paw Ointment with Calendula (has shea butter in it as well as heaps of other goodies ) better than Lucas Paw Paw (Petrochemical based) for skin repair. If you want to go budget basics - neem oil is great for all over.

This is getting really funny. So if you go with the advice so far, you will:

Wash your hands with hand made soap
                            Apply a little shea butter
Use more than one type of moisturiser
                            Apply a lotion
                            Use barrier cream
                            Dab on some olive oil
                            Dont forget the baby oil
                            "Tough Hands"
                            Paw paw oil
                            Wool fat (isnt that lanolin?)
                            Emu Oil
                            Betnovate
                            Robertsons
Plain old Sorbolene or Chemcares Brand
                            NS8
                            Macro vitamin E
                            Cotton Gloves
Stuff obtainable from a chemist in a green and white tube (this one is my favourite) ;D

And if you get all of these you will have saved yourself a $35 visit to a GP!

Yep, sounds sensible to me. :P

Yes, but you can only get betnovate by prescription, so that one has to come off the list!
