Re: Dry and cracked hands from the heat and coffee; help!
Hi Folks,
I too have had my fair share of cracked and dry skin (especially when doing a very busy coffee service) on 1 occassion I even got bleeding hands caused by coffee sucking the moisure out of my hands
The only products I have found that works for me is the Stoko Skin Care range, the importer is based up in Queensland, but they have a network of distributors over the country. Do a google / yahoo search on Stoko Skin Care and youll find one (some even specialize in caring for the coffee industry). Stoko have a number of products especially for the cafe / hospitality industry. I use Duropro as a prework barrier cream, Solopol as a hand cleaner and Stokolan as an after cleaning hand care moisuriser, they are even recommended by the "RASH website as helping those with eczema and other skin conditions and they are earth friendly, best of all for us blokes they arent girly type creams however my girls (staff) love them as well and much cheaper than similar hand creams by the big name companies.

Re: Dry and cracked hands from the heat and coffee; help!
How about some of those Citrus Oil based hand cleaners you see around, rather than soap?
We used to use these at work in combination with an excellent Barrier Foam (dont know if it/was food safe) that came in a small spray can.... It kind of came out like shaving foam and a little blob about the size of a ping-pong ball was all that was required for about 4Hrs of effectiveness. Like KK mentions above, we used to be in situations where all sorts of solvents and compounds came into contact with your hands during the course of a normal days works and without the Citrus Oil cleaner and the application of the Barrier Foam Im sure my hands would be well and truly wrecked by now...
Mal.

There is a product that the body shop sells that is brilliant. I used to suffer a severe allergic reaction to the sanitizer that we used at Maccas. My hands were constantly bleeding and itching from small little welts that would come up.
Its called "Hemp". comes in a small tube for about $20 and it is by far the best I have come across for dry cracked hands.

I used to suffer from this in my chef days. My unprofessional theory is that the glycerine used in a lot of top end moisturisers causes a lot of food products to "stick" and become ingrained in your hands. The answer for me was to throw out the "good" hand cream and buy a tube of Vaseline Intensive Care.

I guess the only reason I suggested a GP is that we are all individuals, and not knowing your medical history, there is always a risk that some remedies may make matters worse.Originally posted by 596469787F6A790B0 link=1234810479/15#15 date=1234879237Im going to put all the suggestions into a hat though and pull one out and go with that. Wink
If all else fails, get a heavy object, like a brick, and drop it from waist height on your big toe. I can pretty much guarantee that youll forget all about your cracked hands for a while. ;D

My hands are always exposed to cleaning chemicals at work
Paw Paw Ointment (Lucas Brand) available from chemists for Aprox $5.00
Is the best thing since sliced bread and works miracles for my hands
Wool Fat I am informed by my wife that for decades has also been used by countless women to repair cracked breast nipples especially when breast feeding
Learn something new every day
(not that I wanted to know about the wool fat one
)

I wouldnt settle for anything less Dennis! So glad Im saving money here from not seeing the GP. ;D
To be honest, I never wouldve expected there to be so many remedies. I thought to some degree that it would be a special case caused only by the coffee and warm handles and hot cups and someone had specially engineered a cream.
But its pretty generic, dry and cracked hands could be a result of all sorts of things!
Im going to put all the suggestions into a hat though and pull one out and go with that.

Re: Dry and cracked hands from the heat and coffee; help!
This is getting really funny. So if you go with the advice so far, you will:
Wash your hands with hand made soap
Apply a little shea butter
Use more than one type of moisturiser
Apply a lotion
Use barrier cream
Dab on some olive oil
Dont forget the baby oil
"Tough Hands"
Paw paw oil
Wool fat (isnt that lanolin?)
Emu Oil
Betnovate
Robertsons
Plain old Sorbolene or Chemcares Brand
NS8
Macro vitamin E
Cotton Gloves
Stuff obtainable from a chemist in a green and white tube (this one is my favourite) ;D
And if you get all of these you will have saved yourself a $35 visit to a GP!
Yep, sounds sensible to me. :P

Sorbolene for washing in & Pure Nutraceuticals Paw Paw Ointment with Calendula (has shea butter in it as well as heaps of other goodies
) better than Lucas Paw Paw (Petrochemical based) for skin repair. If you want to go budget basics - neem oil is great for all over.

You could try this. Macro vitamin e cream. So much better than anything else I have tried. Excellent for sunburn too.

Sorbolene for all skin washing, showers, shampoo, hands. Use a liquid handwash only for the most stubborn stains.
Then a good moisturiser--often in the early days of a cracking episode. I use the Chem-Care range. Sorbolene for general washing and their NS8 works for real cracks.
I recommend staying away from steroids if all possible.
