Whats the model KK? You might want to check out http://www.openprinting.org/printers

Ive found in the past that even though our work printer was in the pre-configured list it just wouldnt work for some reason.I downloaded an updated printer config/driver from the openprinting site & it worked first time.
Basically if your printer is supported youll get a PPD file to download. You can select this when configuring your printer instead of one of the default printers from the list.
Yes have been to this site
It represents the same list as its preloaded on the Mint OS already
    Printer Model is Brother MFC-7420

I just found & can download a driver in zip form, from Brother I just need to work out how to install it manually?

The Linux  system recognises the model name and number of my printer but the driver is not available to choose from the preloaded available list
All other makes and models are also represented and pre loaded automatically just like windows

Linux Mint 9 looks & feels like windows

    One can download it
Then burn it as an ISO (can be set to be done automatically)
Use the OS as often as you like from the CD without installing it to the hard drive (but it can be slow)

If you like it you can then install it

    Interesting, something to contemplate.

As to why one would change or use Linux
I my case its a freedom of choice
No virus attacks = no virus scanner needed to slow everything down
On a community level it helps many people around the world less fortunate as us to use an OS & thousands of software titles for free
Fair enough, guess some of us are a little put off by the MS thing, it is pretty much their way or the highway.

No virus attacks, does that mean you can access bank accounts etc with relative safety?

I can certainly see the reasons for a cheap OS in developing countries.

Reason for the original question is I hate to think Im missing out.

I have not completely changed from XP Pro as I still need to run some proprietary business software on it

Linux is installed as a dual boot with XP Pro on my computer

So far the only problem I have come across is my particular Brother Fax/Printer model not the Linux OS
I had similar problems with XP when I first got it

The Linux  system recognises the model name and number of my printer but the driver is not available to choose from the preloaded available list
All other makes and models are also represented and pre loaded automatically just like windows

Linux Mint or similar distros are just as easy to use as Windows

    Apart from the above
Everything from Linux Mint was recognised automatically and installed in about 6 minutes

Can someone explain in simple terms why there is a desire to change to an OS other than Windows?
Seems to me it involves constant messing with drives, searching for drivers to run peripherals and problems with graphics cards etc.
Not trying to stir, simply attempting to understand why anyone would voluntarily move from an OS that is working well to something that involves so much work and and stuffing around.
Ive been running XP with Office 2007 since its release without problem, can anyone explain what, if any, benefit I would gain from going to Linux or a similar OS?
As I said not trying to rock the boat, simply trying to understand, would hate to think I was missing out.
Oh, and I aint a geek, use a PC as a tool, if it does what its meant to do when its meant to do it Im happy.

I have found a link on the Brother site that explains how to install the LPR printer driver as the cups driver is not working

But the LPR driver needs to be written in the terminal section, I may stuff it up

Can anyone help if you know how to write linux code in the correct way
(code with instructions is on the driver site)
I just need someone to hold my hand just in case I blow up the computer

Cool things I am finding ? as I explore
    Yes indeed KK....

These are all settings that you can configure to suit your own requirements you know... One thing about Linux, it is almost infinitely configurable.... 8-)

Just something I stumbled on to on Mint 9

When I open up my music folder and place the arrow on a song title it will play that title
I dont need to click anything, all that s required is to hover over the title you want to hear, this can be as long as a sample or the whole song

Move the cursor arrow away and it will stop playing
Move to another title and it will start playing that title
Double click and it will open and play as normal

Cool things I am finding ? as I explore

Ive been using Linux for a number of years until just recently.... :

Have switched over to Win7 Pro and so happy with its reliability and performance, have removed Linux from the PC altogether now. May head back to Linux in the future sometime but at this stage, Win7 plus VMware lets me run everything I want these days - with absolutely no fuss at all... 8-)

    Hi All

Installed ubuntu 10.04LTS on my work laptop a few weeks ago.

Love it - quick and stable.   Can access my windows file systems as well.

Contemplating making the move to it full time on both my work and home PC.

Apparently Mint 9 is based on the Ubuntu 10.04 distro
They say Mint 9 more elegant
Its just my preference, I liked Mint 9 more than all the rest so I installed it and now using it

Still need to sort out my fax/printer though

Yep, I used to use Red Hat linux 7-9 and then Fedora before I started using Ubuntu.  I have been running Ubuntu on my work computer for well over 2 years now and it makes a lot of things so much easier.

If you also have a Windows license you can install VirtualBox or VMWare (I use Workstation, but Server is gratis) you can use Windows like normal from within a virtualised computer running on top of Linux.  Although this doesnt really work so good if you are running lots of different games.

If you want to get an idea of all the different distributions of Linux there are you can head over to DistroWatch.

    Update

Since my last post I have been busy downloading & trialling many but not all Linux OS

As noted above I have tested many Linux distros on live CD

The one I liked & installed as dual boot is LINUX MINT 9

I am using it now posting on the forum

    Some Observations so far
    Its fast
    Its easy to use
Its as good as MS Windows
Easy windows style feel ( easy to migrate from MS windows)

    Some Issues
How to use Compix - however my graphics card may not be to spec ?

Find drivers and get my fax/printer working

Everything else works out of the box as it should
