  • buying a cheap camera - advice

I want a cheap camera, as my other broke (canon powershot a75). The only think I didnt like about the a75 was how long it took to focus and take a shot. I am going budget, and thought a pentax optio E60 from teds for $150. Or I could also get a canon powershot a470 for $170 from dick smith, but Im hoping the pentax may be a little quicker than the canon, and hopefully similar quality photo. Any advice or other cheap options recommended? Thanks, Damian.

I like the Canon Ixus series as well, although mine is a (now ancient) 55.

The camera catalogues make me gasp at the reduction in prices over the last couple of years.

Definately wouldnt buy the pentax. Canon make really excellent cameras and in the lower price range it would be hard to consider anything else.

I sell cameras at work ,the Olympus range is very good, if your after an 8MP the FE-20 is a good buy. Before anyone pipes in YES i know they use an XD card which is more expensive. In the last 14mths this is the only brand i haven`t seen come back in for repair, and yes i am sure - i have to deal with all the repair/returns and work orders. Look for an older model Olympus if anyone has any, look for a deleted model and you will get a good eal, they will be making way for the new models and also to clear stuff before the end of June.
            Any Qs just PM me.
            Cheers

Thanks for the advice all. I will skip the pentax then. I checked out the olympus range Jordan, but from a few reviews I read it sounds like the speed of the cheaper olympus is one of the main features that are criticised - whihc is what I want to improve. I think I will go looking today, and check out some of the canon range. Thanks again.

At that end of the market, the Canon provide the best bang for buck IMO.

thanks for that - I will go there today and hopefully come back with a camera. Im thinking if I wnt to avoid the slowness of my old canon I will need to go a little more expensive than the a470. One of the ixus ones maybe, or the sx110 which both have very good reviews - but them I am talking around $300 or so.

Im not sure how old your previous camera was but camera technology has improved considerably in tle last 5 years or so. Resolution and speed have increased while prices are probably now lower than the old film camera instamatic equivalent.

It was about 3 years old - which isnt long for a camera to last.

Trouble is there are so many models, and the push has been on to get more megapixels, and not better quality. They all work fine in good light, its when you start pushing the ISO they start falling down.

Go look at reviews at dpreview.com - they are the 10ton gorillas of the review business.

They have a couple of comparisons of groups of cameras

I still have my fathers old Voigtlander.
It would be over 50 years old now.
