Balancing features that are important to me with quality and price Ive decided on the Garmin 1390T
Hi, dont know much about gps units, but after LOTS of reading I think I have decided on Garmin 765. Just wondering why you went the 1390 instead? thanks. And what do you think of your new GPS? Much better than the 760?

    Another plug for Tom Tom.

I had my car in for service today.
The car has been running a little rough and my mechanic wanted to replace the spark plug leads with genuine Ford leads because he says they never give him any problems.

(I have my own ideas about genuine parts but thats a different topic.)

Anyway, he services a lot of taxis and they dont like down time.
The longer a taxi is off the road the more money is being lost, so they insist on quality parts.

As I was about to go for a walk to Hazels for a coffee (2.5 as it turned out) one of the mechanics passed me in a taxi on his way to do a test drive around the block (ok ok Im getting to the point) and I noticed that there was a Tom Tom on the dash, same model as mine.

(Like AM, my unit has never had a problem, though its only two years old now.)

Mine has never failed (6 years) and they all have issues..

4 others have purchased PNA TomTom units at work and never had a problem..

As to user stuffing up grades.. Users always do that...

1: System upgrade or a Map upgrade.

2: Removing the Battery often fixes lock-ups.. Garmen and others included..  But most get told not to open teh case etc etc.  Then they get a service charge or get charged for a Exchange.

I have about 6 people that come to me to do upgrades / map changes and even just configuring the units.. Some people just do not get it..

I also do teh odd repair and some system get abused like you would not believe...

PS... TomTom units do not liked to be dropped from very high swing bridges on to rocks.. I guess they just are not tough enough

They all have their pros and cons.. Just like Coffee machines.
I still love teh EM 6910... Yet  if you ask teh same question..

How often do they break down and how long does it take to get them repaired?
Many would say they are Crap disposable units...

Heres a question for all you TOM TOM (which seems to be the most popular on this forum) owners.

How often do they break down and how long does it take to get them repaired?

Im asking because a TOM TOM dealer told me that even though they were good performers with great features they were virtually throw away units - if they breakdown there is a delay of months getting them repaired

He had just finished telling me this when a customer came in with an 18 month old TOM TOM which wasnt turning on and he told her the same thing.  He was able to get hers working by doing a firmware update - seems she had stuffed it trying to do one herself

He is one of the biggest GPS dealers in Oz and seemed to know what he was on about.

Please dont shoot me  :-[  Im just the messenger

Just hire a car with one in it...I think that that would be your best choice. Friends of mine did that and drove themselves from the north to the south of the US with out missing a turn or getting lost...reckoned it was the best thing they did...

As for having one thing that does all...

Im still getting my head around my phone which, essentially is meant to be a communications device...has a camera in it, let alone a GPS unit...I dont mind at all that my GPS is in my car...whilst my phone is in my pocket...it kinda seems like the world is right in that regard... What about one I can use in OZ and the USA, Son will be getting married in the USA in October and we will probably be traveling from Virginia to Georgia then to Florida by car. Is it a better option to just get one over there and throw it away when we leave?

Of course if they just need a cradle and power lead Im screwed.
So TG, where exactly do you park your car?  :

At Optus - secure carpark under the building including armed guards.
    (OK so they arent armed.)

My Aussie version Tom Tom One 3rd Edition, only has 512MB of built in memory.
Overseas version IIRC still have the card slot (which they removed from the Aussie one to reduce the cost).

Id buy one over there and then buy an Aussie map when I got back.

Ive used TomTom successfully in Hawaii and I have the France map loaded and ready to go for a trip later this year.
My brother has used the USA map with success. The issue with getting the whole lower 48 USA map is size. Ususally over 1Gb, so you normally need a dedicated storage card for it. State by state is smaller, but can be more of a pain if travelling across the state lines and needing to swap maps mid-trip.
Most of the main players have webpages that will give you an idea of the maps available and their cost.

    Brett.

Most will work any where... Ya just need to get the maps for the area you want..

Some systems are cheeper and easer to use than others.

Mate just left for England and had to pay $135 for the English maps.. (Garmin)

For the USA, it can be a pain as you may not be able to get selected states and have to get the lot..

Some systems - Destinator and others allow you to crop and save local areas... This is good if ya never leave ya local area / township and it helps in performance... When ya do, you just select anothe map or your main one..

Mine has been to Canada / USA / GB / Ireland / NZ and France etc... Just changed maps as needed. As it was also my PDA... It held addresses and contact details as well.

it looks too much like the Mio system and I found that hard to work with
Same here. My daughter loaned me her Mio before I had my Tom Tom.
Besides trying to get me to do illegal U-turns at trafffic lights, it appears to have 3 settings:
    *Fastest
    *Shortest
    *Get Dad lost (undocumented)

Not if you remove the GPS as well as the cradle and wipe away the suction mark from the windscreen
Thats what Ive done in very suss areas but Im putting my faith in human nature now and hoping that in seeing the cradle and power lead prominently diplayed they will realise I took the unit with me.

Of course if they just need a cradle and power lead Im screwed.  :

When they first came out they were highly desirable..  Today...  Aldi sell them and the Kids have the maps on their Mobiles ...

Thus I no longer give it a second thought...

Unless I am in a bad area having a meet up with a CS    Then, I dont know what I should be protecting
