The only aussie beer brand I will buy is Coopers.
i used to review beers for the newcastle herald for five years or so until recently and in that time the beer scene in australia was completely transformed.

coopers and james squire are no longer the only decent beers around. new small breweries are springing up everywhere and most of them are good - they have to be, because they survive on the quality of their product, not the size of their advertising budget.

if anyone sees a beer called Crema, by Matilda Bay, id recommend you buy it at any price. it was a seasonal beer from the people who make redback etc, and may or may not come out again. it was made with real coffee as part of the liquor. the brewer was very particular about his coffee and went to the expense of buying a roaster just so he could get it how he liked it. then he made beer with it.

i always like holgate beers, although some australian drinkers might find them a little strange.

Seriously, We drink to get Pissed. A Belgian Raspberry Kriek unpasturised in Houston Tx, and a Mexican Negro Modello were outstanding.. Australia needs to let in unpasturised Beers..

Currently drinking xxxx cans - better in stubbies.
A 70 yr old mate takes the piss out of his BIL who is a wine Nazi by putting Ice into his wine selections.

Currently drinking James Squire Amber Ale out of the fridge.

Have been told to look out for Emersons - out of Dunedin, NZ. BIG raps for it. Havent found it around here - sells all over NZ plus distributors in Vic, Qld & WA. The web site looks very inviting.

          Re: Any beersnobs here?

Little Creatures Bright Ale is one of the best beers ive tasted. James Squire Golden Ale is another fave, brewed just round the corner from me too.
Senator, yes, Erdinger Bavarian Weissbier is really lovely, but cant agree about your aussie beers/ no snob comment. I think SOME australian beers are SOME of the best beers available. Do love the Belgian and German white beers though. Drinking a beautiful Paulaner Hefe-Weissbier at the moment. Very rich. Hmmmmmm. Sometimes wish they hardly contained alcohol so i could drink more than one or two on a weeknight. Same as with coffee. wish i could drink it all day without any sleep/lack of problems. Oh well. I guess thats what keeps it special, not being able to over indulge so often.

Hey cool I never noticed this start. My beer snobbery rivals the coffee one. What do you base it on? Ive spent more on coffee, but coffee stuff is worth a lot more. Ive also built a brewery where I brew from cracking my own grain to filtering, and serving from bottles or from taps.

If I ever buy beer it is LCPA or bright ale. More often the pale. Top stuff

              Re: Any beersnobs here?

Im loving most of the boutique aussie beers.

Standouts for me lately have been:
              - an Oyster Stout from Hunter Valley Brewing Co. They boiled oysters into the brew. Think Stout with salt.
              - a lager from the same brewery. it was amazing.
              - the latest batch of Matilda Bay Beez Neez has been an improvement on the past.
              - James Squire Amber Ale is still a solid performer.

Probably my most memorable beer was a Chimay Grande Reserve - not the massive one with the gold wrapping at the mouth of the bottle, but the size down from that. Which I got through in one sitting. Mind you, I decided that staying seated would be a good idea after that...

Potters were always good, and ever since Keith took over as master brewer they have only got better. I highly recommend the Kolsch and the Wit (if they are still running the wit, thats more of a summer thing). Big props to him. And I have one of those chimay grande reserves ready to crack soon

The only difference with any of the fancy chimay bottles is that they have been aged. The blue is the only one that takes well to aging, so they bottle them in bigger bottles with dates on them. Get a case of the little chimay blues and crack one every year for the next several years and you can see how the flavour develops

Just out of interest how long can you keep Chimay blue for? I found a 2001 sitting in with some reds the other day when I was giving them a turn

At 9% better have a mate around

Tonights roasting beer is Redback with a slice of Lemon. Beans are Yemen, Harrar, Robusta and Indian TM.

i read of a vertical tasting of about 25 chimay blue vintages and i think they said the 15-year-old was the cut-off point. after that it became a little limp. coopers vintage doesnt last that long but ive had some 6 years old and it was still drinkable. just not that lively.

if you want something to scour the throat and sterilise the gut, try and get hold of some Icon2IPA from Murrays Brewery.
but get a mate to drink it with - youll have trouble finishing the bottle on your own.
