Just seen a free iPhone app from a non-sponsor so wont mention anyone, but great idea as it lets you know the closest place to get their beans which seem quite popular in Sydney.
    Very nice.

Every man and his dog has an iPhone these days, im guessing not every man and his dog knows where to get some good beans from.
Business Case right there.  Reaching the uninformed / ignorant with an end-game of getting sponsors (Edit: and Beanbay) more walk-ins / sales of either equipment or consumables is a fantastic idea. Might even encourage prospective sponsors to jump onboard if they know theyll get themselves displayed on the app (with a potentially bigger audience than this site delivers).

I sit beside one and will see if he can get me a ballpark figure in terms of effort.

With the GPS features of the equipment there is great potential for the app to present sponsors in defined proximity to the phone itself.  <-- Very marketable.

      OT Re: iPhone App

OK AM, now were getting closer to the problem. Its the old "ID 10 T" error!

Obviously Apple cannot support, or be seen to support Jailbreaking because of the overall jeopardy it puts on their software--and it violates the user agreement.

However--a software change is HIGHLY unlikely to cause a physical problem, and before returning a jailbroken phone for repairs it would be smart to "restore" it to standard and check if it is still "broken".

"Theres no such thing as idiot-proof machinery, idiots should stay away from machinery."

ps--I love my free turn-by-turn GPS---only available on a jailbroken phone. Do you think that Tom-Tom et al dont like the competition and thats why Apple turned the app down?

All so true... Problem is that some get others to do it and then don;y know how to un do it..

As I understand it... The first person did a jail break... at OS 3.0 and then at some stage go an upgrade to 3.1. Then had to do a jail break again :-) Some time after his phone went funny He did a restore to Apple 3.1 and it worked for a while.. Not jure what happened but he says he did not try to Jail break again.. Statred to play up and when they wanted to get it repaired... The Store stated that their data base showed it had been jail broken !!! I am unaware of the phone ever getting to the store..

Note: "Theres no such thing as idiot-proof machinery, idiots should stay away from machinery and IT"

          Re: iPhone App

Hmmmm, 3.1 was buggy and caused "iBricks" all over the world as well as excess battery usage. There were so many complaints that Apple quickly replaced it with 3.12. (I have no idea what happened to 3.11!)

I would recommend to the company that no upgrading happens until the new software has been out and proven for at least a fortnight.

I did a big search last night and cannot find any other references to "tracking" jailbreaks, although before the complaints of 3.1 reached "massive" proportions Apple stores gave out all sorts of excuses. ;D

this is common for anything with an OS , look at microsoft, adobe......the list goes on and on, car manufacturers with recalls, phones get firmware updates constantly, how many routers have i loaded new OISs onto, problems occur, its fact, windows 7 has been Beta tested for ages now, will that stop updates? not a chance........the iphone is no different......

            cheers

If its the new global one I reckon its pretty average. Everything gets an 8 and it doesnt matter whether its good or bad. When I see Maling room get a 2 from some tool who had to wait for his coffee one weekend, I stop reading...

This type of app is always an issue when anyone can rate something. No judges calibration. I give it   [smiley=thumbdown.gif] [smiley=thumbdown.gif]

Good thing its free, as if I had paid for it, Id want my $$$ back.

As an app - it is really not bad, in terms of function etc and the ability to add information. The ratings are not great - quite happy to agree there. But is is quite handy for finding places and getting additional information on places you have heard about through other channels.

Apologies for resurrecting an old thread... but it seemed to make more sense to continue this one than start another...

Id be interested to know what sort of features CS would like to see in a coffee app (Yes, Im a CS and (among other things) an iOS developer).

I think there are some "good" apps out there for reviewing cafes, finding cafes, instructional/reference apps (ala http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1254542200/5#5 ) - but imho they each have their shortcomings or limitations - in particular theyre very focused on one particular aspect, whilst there is loads of potential for a more "complete" app.

If theres enough interest and some common thoughts on what would make a good "coffee app" - then itd definitely be next on my dev list.

Be interested to hear everyones thoughts on what they consider to be must have features, and at the same time what the dont want.

Ive got loads of ideas, and am not trying to "steal" others - just curious to see what like minded CSs would utilise.

                            Cheers

what sort of apps do you develop? I have seen quite a few different apps regarding ordering systems or coffee reviews, etc, and they are normally paid apps which always under perform. Sorry to ressurect the thread AGAIN but I am interested in what sort of apps you can create? Or if you know any good free coffee apps?

Actually, I believe anyone who knows about coffeesnobs.com.au doesnt really need an app to find BB or a cafe...

what I would like to have is a tasting/cupping notes application..
couldnt find a decent one which would be good to use for roasting notes and cupping notes ...

                                any ideas?
