    Re: Spin bike

Warren...can highly recommend the Ducati idea...

Pavboy...Im guessing you dont have the dough for the big Duke which is basically ready to race on the track ...well, if all you want to do is go fast, then you probably deserve a Honda :P

A Ducati is well served by those who know what a beautiful corner feels like...

    Re: Spin bike

    Thanks for the replies everyone.
    The response has been great

Im now thinking of getting both, a real bike for myself and one for my wife Lee and a spin bike

I think we should be able to make some time, maybe once a week, or so to go for a ride. Then use the spin bike (plus other excerscise equipment we own) in the evenings!!

As for the real bikes, Im thinking of the hybrid type :-?

I found a commercial spin bike (22kg flywheel, pillar bearings etc) for half price

    What do you think?

    Warren.

My $0.02 worth, as the mum of a reasonably dedicated cyclist, the mag (go fluid - they are quieter) and a set of training dvds (we have "Spinervals") gives a great workout, is safe and doesnt get boring, and the bike is there for a real ride when you get the chance - urge - whatever

Rather than rollers Mag trainers are safer

Rollers take a lot of concentration and skill - one moment of inattention and ouch!

Magnetic trainers are great - but if you really want a spin bike then your need to ride a range of them as the difference in position, noise and action (especially resistance) will make a big difference to how much you ride it as well as your enjoyment level. There are few things worse than riding an uncomfortable bike - even if it is going nowhere!

Here is a clearance one cheap: http://www.rocksolidfitness.com.au/sale.php

Have you considered a roller for the best of both worlds?

They come with variable resistance so you can increase the intensity (a la spin).  The downside is you cant vary it as easily.  A job for your kids?  "Keep daddys face purple junior".  :P

Also...they require more balance to stay on (good for core muscles)
I like this idea from Epic

I would love a "real bike" but I realy dont have the time to go for a ride (work and training hours)

Thats the reason for chosing a spin bike, I can train in any weather or time and do it in front of the telly
finding time to ride can be a pain sometimes. Not that Ive used one myself, but I wonder what the cost comparison is between a road bike/stationary trainer combo and a dedicated spin bike is. At least with the road bike/stationary trainer combo you have a road bike for the rare occasion you can get out, which you cant do with a spin bike.

And that would be something along the lines of a Ducati.
Uncanny really, Ive been looking at one! Torn between a baby Ducati or a bigger Honda at the moment. Im being pushed in the direction of bigger, as the baby Duck is way less power than my last bike and I may just get bored - even with that nice Italian engineering under me.

Get a Ducati Warren - the adrenalin rush you get from riding one for an hour or so at high speed just has to be good for you!

I always get the feeling they are only running on 2 cylinders though Den...

    ;D
