    Re: Computer problems

if you want to test hardware, download yourself a copy of memcheck, free open source memory tester - will tell you if you have bad memory (jokes aside).

Have you recently changed the orientation of the way your computer sits? I have seen instances where servers are sitting on shelves in a rack and then swapped over to a rack mount kit, the bearings in the HDD give way and the drives goes out to lunch.

If your in Melb, I can recommend a good computer tech to take a look (me)

      Thanks melbuurn

I didnt think of the memcheck - realsied Ive used it before but my memory fails me  [smiley=huh.gif]

Ive stuck a new CPU fan on it and it didnt lock up at start up. Thats promising! Installed the Probe utility and the CPU temp is running at 40 degrees.

Not calling victory yet but looking good

          Re: Computer problems

OK, update on this. bassway was right. The CMOS I think: After removing RAM and cards and cleaning contatcts, the BIOS displayed some funny characters then, on reboot, no POST. Dead MB

          Replaced (in order):

          Power supply - unncecessary
CPU fan - a worthwhile replacement
1 GB hard drive - not necessary, but a useful purchase
          motherboard + 2 sticks of DDM3 RAM

I now have a fully functioning system which should be good for at least two more years. Out of pocket the best part of $400

With the new CPU fan and a bit of silver grease the CPU runs at a cool 33 degrees - room perhaps for overclocking it a notch but I probably wont bother.

The old GeForce 8500GT graphics card still works fine - a noisy fan at startup but I might try IBs trick of removing, cleaning and giving the bearing a bit of a spray.

Are case fans and RAM heat spreaders worthwhile?

Ya want braging right = Yes

Functionality = Only if ya over clocking a pushing read and refresh rates or CPU ..i.e. Over clocking

Fans add noise and unless done correctly are of only little help to temps unless over clocking... If the Ambient temp is up... Only one way - Aircon.

Can ya take a pic of the dead MOB... Close ups of the caps...

Thnaks for the info. A colleague already advised these are only necessary if overclocking.

Checked each of the caps AM. No leaks, no bulging ones. Definitely no dodgy ones there based on sight.

Checked, guided by the pics on post #7 of this page:

Close ups of all the caps? Sorry, not today.

No probs.. Just me being anal... The tec in me just wants to confirm.. It is part of teh learning and understand process.. The board jockey approach is just hard to deal with... But I also understand that some time; that is the way it is.

                Glad ya up and running...
