  • Tour De France 2010

    Well its on again
The Tour De France commenced in the early hours of this morning AU time

I was watching the first day of cycling with glee

I have not seen so many crashes on any tour as there was on this occasion

Unfortunately we have lost an up and coming Australian rider to one of those incidents

    Snip:
HTC-Columbia suffered a blow even before the halfway stage of stage one on the Tour de France Sunday after Australian Adam Hansen fractured his collarbone in a crash forcing the rider to pull out of the race.

I will endeavour to keep you updated as I did last year

    Stage 2 (201 km)
    Bruxelles (Brussels) >> Spa

Day 2 on the Tour De France was also incident packed with a crash at the 56 km stage

    Snip:
    Spilled oil blamed for carnage
    06 July 2010 | 04:55

Spilled oil from a motorbike which crashed ahead of the Tour de France peloton on the second stage overnight is suspected to have been the main cause of crashes involving dozens of riders.

Reigning champion Alberto Contador, seven-time winner Lance Armstrong, last years runner-up Andy Schleck and Australias Cadel Evans were among the crash victims as the peloton raced up and down the hills which dotted the end of the 201km ride from Brussels.

All emerged relatively unscathed to finish the stage, won by Frenchman Sylvain Chavanel after a successful breakaway, although both Contador and Schleck were complaining of their injuries.

A statement from Contadors Astana team suggested the oil, which mixed with water on the rainy stage, was the reason so many riders crashed.

Sylvain Chavanel broke away at the 17 km mark and led all the way to the finish with a over a 3 min gap from the peloton

        Stage 3 (213 km)
Wanze >> Arenberg Porte du Hainaut

This stage was run on narrow cobble stone roads in the French country side for 98% of the course

I could feel the bone jarring just watching it

One of the favourites has withdrawn due to injury

        Snip:
Schleck collarbone broken in three places

Luxembourgs Frank Schleck broke his collarbone in three places, his Saxo Bank team reported overnight, after the Tour de France hopeful crashed out of the race on the chaotic third stage.

Schleck hit the ground on the fourth, and one of the most difficult, of seven cobblestone sectors on the finale of the 213km race from Wanze in Brussels to here.

        Back to my cometary
The yellow jersey was overtaken on this stage and a new set of leaders has emerged
Among them is Australian Cadel Evans  sitting on position 3

                Stage 6 (227.5 km)
                Montargis >> Gueugnon

                News Snip:
Two in a row for Cavendish
Mark Cavendish wrote a new page in British cycling history when he equalled the feats of three of the Tour de Frances top sprint greats with his 12th career victory overnight.

Fabian Cancellara of Switzerland retained the race leaders jersey after a long, 227.5km sixth stage from Montargis which, for the second day in a row, resulted in a bunch sprint after another futile breakaway.

For the second consecutive day Cavendish proved too fast for his rivals, the Isle of Man sprinter coming off the wheel of formidable lead-out man Mark Renshaw to finish the final 200 metres on his own.

                              Stage 7 (165.5 km)
                              Tournus >> Station des Rousses

A lot of riders suffered from the humidity & on the hills of stage 7 that ranged from 50 mt to 1168 mt (see insert pic)

Cadel Evans is slowly creeping up and now placed second overall

                              News Snip:

Evans happy to avoid yellow for now
Australian Cadel Evans admitted he was happy to sit just behind the race leader of the Tour de France after a first mountain test for the contenders here on Saturday.

Two-time runner-up Evans began the seventh stage, a 165.5km ride from Tournus, just 39 seconds off the pace of overnight leader Fabian Cancellara of the Saxo Bank team.

But after a combination of unbearable humidity and the pelotons pace took its toll, Switzerland Cancellara tumbled down the standings to 58th overall, more than 13 minutes adrift.

Evans is still in second place, but is now 1min 25sec behind new race leader Sylvain Chavanel after the Frenchman capped a superb attack with his second stage win of the race for Quick Step.

Evanss fellow yellow jersey challenger Andy Schleck is fourth at 1min 55sec, with reigning champion Alberto Contador sixth at 2min 26sec and seven-time champion Lance Armstrong 14th at 3min 16sec.

In theory, it is an ideal position for Evans, who is keen not to heap the pressure of having to defend the yellow jersey on his BMC team so early in the race.

Current overall standings on stage 7
