    Re: Tour De France 2010

That was an awesome stage, so much more exciting than the world cup final! Cadel was fantastic and Contadore didnt seem to have enough left to go with Schleck. Its really hard to know if he was foxing or really on his limits. Schleck is an amazing climber...hardly seems to puff.

      Re: Tour De France 2010

Lance Armstrong is probably to far behind in time due to a couple of crashes last night to be of any danger of challenging the leaders

      Cadel is an all rounder
Good at climbs and good at time trials
For that reason I feel he has the best chance of the top 5
Only the strength of his team will make or break him

        Re: Tour De France 2010

Lance is finished and he has now conceded that himself. It was really sad to see him crash twice and then get tangled in a third crash which cost him more time. Sometimes I want to see the great ones retire at their peak...like Bjorn Borg did (but then again he went broke   ).

At the start I thought Cadel was an outside chance for podium.  But if he can hang in in the mountains like he did yesterday and do a great time trial anything is possible. Maybe Contadore is not in quite the same form as last year and Schleck is no time trialer.

Evans admits his Tour is all but over
            14 July 2010 | 00:00

The Australian collapsed in tears into a teammates arms at the finish, and after talking to BMC team manager John Lelangue he finally found enough composure to explain his day of suffering in the saddle.

He revealed that the left arm he injured in a crash early on the eighth stage was actually fractured, handicapping him for a stage which was billed as a major battle between the yellow jersey contenders.

"It cost me a lot of energy, but maybe in my situation, in the yellow jersey, its also vulnerability," Evans said.

"Im not at my normal level, but when youre in the yellow jersey at the Tour whether youre good or not you have to be there.

Cadel Evans has admitted his hopes of becoming Australias first Tour de France champion are over after he lost precious minutes to key rivals on Stage 9 because of a previously unreported fracture to his elbow.

The BMC rider had taken the race lead at the end of Stage 8, when he finished 10 seconds behind stage winner Andy Schleck to take a 20-second overall lead on the Luxemburger.

However a day after the races first rest day Evans was dropped halfway through the 25.5km Col de la Madeleine climb as the Astana team of reigning champion Alberto Contador set a punishing pace.

He eventually finished 42nd at 8min 07sec behind Schleck and Contador as Frenchman Sandy Casar took the stage honours having been part of an early breakaway.

            Evans, the two-time runner-up in 2007 and 2008, dropped 17 places to 18th overall and 7min 47sec behind Schleck.

WOW, what a race. I didnt see that coming. After seeing him riding the Giro I was concerned Cadel would bonk in the pyrenees but it was his chalky bones instead that ended his tour.

Whats going to be the next big story?

                Stage 10 (179 km)
                Chambéry >> Gap

                News Snips

News Snip 1) Lance Armstrong says he is prepared to cooperate in a federal investigation into alleged doping fraud by his former team US Postal as long as it does not become a "witch hunt".

The cancer survivor and seven-time Tour de France champions participation on the 2010 edition has been hampered by a series of damning doping allegations levelled by former teammate Floyd Landis.

Landis was stripped of his yellow jersey in 2006 after testing positive for testosterone and spent millions of dollars, and four years, trying to clear his name before confessing to doping two months ago.

Along with his confessions, however, were claims that Armstrong and several other riders in US Postal were involved in systematic doping practices, allegations which Armstrong has denied.

On Tuesday The New York Times reported that US authorities have issued grand jury subpoenas to potential witnesses in the probe.

News Snip 2) A lack of sleep due to pain from a fractured elbow led Cadel Evans collapse on the ninth stage of the Tour de France when he lost the yellow jersey in spectacular fashion.

Two-time runner-up Evans finally looked to have forged a privileged place among the main victory contenders when he battled through a tough first week to take the lead on the first day in the high mountains Sunday.

A day after shunning the media during Mondays rest day in an apparent bid to fully rest, Evans dream fell apart after he lost over eight minutes to new race leader Andy Schleck and Spains reigning champion Alberto Contador.

                  Stage 11 (184.5 km)
                  Sisteron >> Bourg-lès-Valence

                  News Snip
                  Cavendish wins controversial stage
Britains Mark Cavendish, of HTC-Columbia, dominated a controversial bunch sprint to win the 11th stage of the Tour de France.

Luxembourgs Andy Schleck, of Saxo Bank, retained the yellow jersey with his lead of 41 seconds on Spains Alberto Contador intact after a 184.5km race between Sisteron and here.

Cavendish, the winner of six stages in 2009 and four in 2008, has now won three stages in this years race, taking his career tally to an impressive 13.

In doing so, the Isle of Man sprinter surpasses the 12-stage victory tally of several notable sprinters including German great Erik Zabel, Italian Mario Cipollini and Australian Robbie McEwen.

                  Renshaw booted from Tour
Australian Mark Renshaw paid the price for his teams win-at-all-costs approach to the Tour de France 11th stage on when he was kicked out of the race for headbutting.

Renshaw, the lead-out man for HTC-Columbia teammate Mark Cavendish, played a crucial role in Cavendishs six stage wins on the race last year.

But in the final 500 metres of the 184.5km stage from Sisteron, the normally affable Australian lost his head when he tried to headbutt Garmin-Transitions Kiwi lead-out man Julian Dean three times.

Cavendish eventually raced on towards his third stage win of the race, and 13th of his career, as Renshaw then produced another blatant blunder by trying to block Deans sprinter, Tyler Farrar, as the American tried to come up the inside of the barriers.

Well I reckon well done Renshaw. Julian Dean came across his line and tried to block Renshaw and Cavendish, so he got what he asked for. IMHO that proves Renshaw is the best lead-out man in the world.

                    Cheers

                      News Snip
Contador cuts Schlecks lead as Rodriguez wins

Spains Joaquin Rodriguez won the 12th stage of the Tour de France, with Luxembourgs Andy Schleck holding onto the race lead after a late struggle to stay in touch.

Rodriguez held off the challenge of his compatriot Alberto Contador, who launched a late charge on the gruelling 3km climb towards Mende that caught his rivals cold and allowed him to cut Schlecks advantage to 31 seconds.

It was 31-year-olds Rodriguez first stage win in the race, in which the Katusha rider is competing for the first time.

Schleck (Saxo Bank) recovered to cross the line in fifth place alongside Belgiums Jurgen Van den Broeck (Omega Pharma-Lotto), 10 seconds behind defending Tour champion Contador.

Third place went to Contadors Astana teammate Alexandre Vinokourouv, a survivor of a breakaway that started after 60km of the rolling 210.5km stage from Bourg-de-Peage.

Renshaw says sorry to Tour chiefs

Australian Mark Renshaw has apologised to Tour de France officials for the headbutting incident which saw him controversially thrown off the race after Stage 11.

Renshaw, the lead-out man for British sprinter Mark Cavendish in the HTC-Columbia team, was disqualified after he headbutted Kiwi Julian Dean three times and also for blocking the path of American Tyler Farrar as they drove hard for the finish line.

Race officials acted almost immediately, first declassifying the normally affable Australian before excluding him from the rest of this years race after checking television pictures.

                        News Snip

Aussie brotherhood off the Tour menu

Australias rise up the world rankings has led to increasing calls for the creation of a national cycling team to fly the flag in Europe.

Those hopes couldnt be further from reality going into the crucial Pyrenees mountain stages of this years Tour de France, where Aussie brotherhood simply isnt on the race menu.

While former two-time runner-up Cadel Evans continues to battle through the pain of a fractured elbow, veteran Stuart OGrady is doing his best to make sure the BMC team leader, among others, doesnt become a threat for his team leader at Saxo Bank, race leader Andy Schleck.

And then theres Mick Rogers, HTC-Colombias biggest hope for a top ten finish -- and now in virtual competition with Evans, over whom he has a lead of 21secs.

Evans will go into Sundays 14th stage 8:08 behind Schleck, and praying his handicap wont leave him trailing on the first of four punishing days in the Pyrenees.
