      Re: Android Phones

Has anyone got a handle on how best to organise program files into folders? Can you do it using the Android system or can you do it downloading a program - ie like Iphone 4s hold and move into another file thus creating a folder and then being able to load more files into it.

      Cheers

        Re: Android Phones

A malicious application that can steal cash via phones running Googles Android operating system has been found.

The program poses as a media player but once installed starts sending premium rate text messages.

The service being sent messages is operated by the malicious apps creator, who scoops up the fees.

Discovered by Kaspersky Labs, it is believed to be the first booby-trapped application for Android.

In a security advisory Kaspersky said that the fake media player was most prevalent among Russian Android users. The risk to Android owners worldwide is believed to be low.

Tonight Ill fiddle with some other apps after I get my contacts across from the Nokia and will see what I like.
I dont know whether the Galaxy includes something like this already, but I can recommend Call Confirm as a useful app preventing accidental calls (especially while still learning about the phone) - ended up saving me a few times

            Hey Andy,

Im waiting for the Galaxy S to hit the other networks, but definitely Android over iPhone.

Have you got the update to Froyo yet? Check out this voice to text - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6DacVqGQVo0 -Im surprise by how accurate it is.

Alternatively, on Eclair, you can download Vlingo from Samsung Apps, but I have found it to not be particularly accurate.

              Re: Android Phones

Im still running Eclair. Had a play with Vlingo for a few minutes.. I was excited and then letdown when it didnt work very well

Froyo official on Samsung is later in the year (I thought). A good voice to text would be cool though... one that works with Aussie (not oss ie) accents and works with the background noise of a car would be really nice.

The K9 mail rocks. Its a much better mail client and while I dont want to write "war and peace" on a phone the Galaxy is great for a couple of lines.

The funniest/dumbest/shock-value app I have found so far is RoadSMS... you can type an SMS while driving as you can see the road via the phones camera. Sort of a pseudo heads up display.

The voice to text is much improved with Froyo. I actually got a usable SMS out of it when I tried it for the first time last week. Its not perfect but certainly usable

                  Re: Android Phones

Just about to enter the fray with a HTC desire, we just cannot get Ipones at work and its becoming stupid.
Only issue is that its a real stopgap measure because in January we become a blackberry house because we have merged with a much larger company and will move onto some of their platforms.

There is a new desire out but teat would have meant a wait, the screen is supposed to be better so will try that when back from TechED in September.

Thanks for all the tips here, especially the IMAP issues as I collect multiple emails addresses with my phones.

It will be my first time using android so I am looking forward to how diffent it is to the IPhone platform.

                  Mal

Ive got a way around this problem - most would consider it overkill - Im running MS Exchange 2010 at home on Win Server 2008 R2 - Activesyncd to my wifes HTC Desire and my HTC Touch Pro 2 (both awesome phones btw - TP2 hardware keyboard is better than iPhone or any other screen keyboard Ive used and great for regular emailing).  full wireless email/calendar sync between the phone and pc is good - syncs all my SMSs into Outlook as well.  My wife loves her Android phone, but Ill be waiting to see if Windows Phone 7 gives a decent capacitive screen + slide-out keyboard option before deciding what to get next.

I think Windows Phone OS will always be in hte "but the brochure looked pretty" group. So many promises but rebooting all day when thy hang is another matter.

If you get a chance, try Swype text input on the Samsung and Motorola phones. It is amazing to use, nearly faster than using a full sized keyboard!

I like the idea of some of those, ta. Pushnig stuff into the "cloud" makes sense. I seem to spend half my week forwarding emails between home and snobbery 1&2.

...of course Coopers exchange server would help that too.

I was a sceptic when I first installed Swype and went back to the standard Android keyboard. Decided to give it another try a few weeks ago and this time im convinced. A much faster way to input text on touchscreen phones, thats for sure. Its a winner.

you cant just run full imap on all machines/devices and always leave your emails on the server until you archive them to local email client storage??

yes - Technet   - using Technet sw at home isnt necessarily in compliance with their t&c so isnt a cheap solution for everybody, but I figure its legit for me since Im halfway through the MS Enterprise Administrator certification atm and at some stage well be moving the old Ex2003 setup at work to Ex2010 so its my testing / development environment

WinMo 6.5 is pretty stable and I didnt have any trouble with 6.1 either - Ive never had it hang and maybe a few times in the past 14 months Ive had it run a bit slow and a reboot fixed that, but at most that would once every couple of months. I like the HTC Sense UI too - never need the stylus.  Win phone 7 is getting some mixed reviews since it will be missing a few features at launch (similer to 1st gen iphone) that are supposed to be added through updates later.  some seem to reckon it will be a major flop, others reckon it has enough to potentially be a winner - esp with its xbox live gaming support.  Ill reserve judgement until I see it...

I havent heard of it but then Im very new to android - is it available for HTCs as well?  Ill try it out over the weekend on mrss Desire.
One thing I like about the keyboard on the TP2, aside from the fact that it was reviewed as the best implementation of a hardware keyboard on any phone to date, is that I still get a full screen when typing - no ** taking up half my screen real estate, but if swype is as good as you say Ill give it a try, it would be good to wean myself off the hw ** as it would vastly increase my choice of phones when it comes upgrade time

I too just got the Samsung Galaxy S and yes I am impressed, I think i must sound like a samsung sales agent to everyone I show the phone off to. I also got given on the weekend an iPad so last week end I was torn which one to play on first. So to solve this dilema I used both, side by side, downloading apps etc to boost my new toys functionalitlies. As Javaphile would say gotta love New Toys.
