If you get a chance, try Swype text input on the Samsung and Motorola phones. It is amazing to use, nearly faster than using a full sized keyboard!
I was a sceptic when I first installed Swype and went back to the standard Android keyboard. Decided to give it another try a few weeks ago and this time im convinced. A much faster way to input text on touchscreen phones, thats for sure. Its a winner.
I also love the Swype. I was pretty darn hopeless at texting on a normal keypad due to Shrek Style fingers so just running my mammoth paw over the keypad and only getting close to the letters was enough to get my texting speed and accuracy ;Dup to scratch with the younger generations bionic finger speed texting. Love it.

you cant just run full imap on all machines/devices and always leave your emails on the server until you archive them to local email client storage?
Until now I have run IMAP4 on everything except the PC at home, where I run POP3. It made sense at the time as at the end of the day only stuf left in the in inbox of other mail clients would be downloaded. But... my mail volume is so high these days that as soon as I open mail at home there is a pile of things that need to be "pushed" back to the Snobbery.

IMAP4 at home could help fix that and then just run a POP3 client on demand or auto archive at home. I might shuffle it around to try now that Im doing so much more email at other places.

      So maybe it is?

It is amazing to use, took all of 5 minutes to get used to and I would never buy another phone without it now. You can keep all the other apps and features... they are much the same on Apple and Android but Swype rocks and is the first time that input on a small device is really usable!

Good voice control would come close... (as discussed above) and google voice is heading the right way but I have a month to wait for Android 2.2 (if the Samsung rumours are true.)

It is amazing how "rough enough is good enough" with swype and the auto-learning of hen pecked words is cool too. "Coffeesnobs" works with Swype now on my phone with unky little squigles on the F and O to get double letters.

I have the HTC Desire. I signed up for the Swype Beta as well, but I have heard that it is std now on some of the Samsung phones. I think chances are that they have signed off on a deal to keep it exclusive. It would be one of the only Apps out there that I would actually pay for on the Android market........ if it became available on there.

The two most recent world records for phone typing (still pending, according to the website) are Swipe, and (just a tad faster) iPhone4. 8-)

Im still wandering back and forth between the QWERTY and Dvorak keyboards on the phone. While I use Dvorak for touch typing the facility doesnt always translate over the single finger work. I guess when I learned Dvorak my fingers did the work, not my eyes.

I thought Swype had the record? http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/breaking-news/melissa-thompson-smashes-worlds-fastest-texting-record/story-e6frf7jx-1225908660422

                Re: Android Phones

Copied from "The Unofficial Apple Weblog":

"This just in from the "bragging about marginally useful skills" department. This week, Salford, UK-based Melissa Thompson set a "texting speed record" on her Samsung Galaxy S by typing two sentences in 25.94 seconds. The sentences in question were: "The razor-toothed piranhas of the genera Serrasalmus and Pygocentrus are the most ferocious freshwater fish in the world. In reality they seldom attack a human." Note that Melissa used a Swype keyboard on the Galaxy.

Her record stood for hours until iPhone 4 owner Brian posted a video (above) of himself banging out the same pair of sentences on his stock iPhone 4 in just under 22 seconds."

Newspapers are too slow these days. ;D

Has anyone got a handle on how best to organise program files into folders?  Can you do it using the Android system or can you do it downloading a program - ie like Iphone 4s hold and move into another file thus creating a folder and then being able to load more files into it.

                    Cheers
Yep - folders built into Android well before Apple thought of it.
                    Slightly different mechanism though.
Long press on a blank bit of screen and you have the popup allowing you to add an app, widget contact and FOLDER etc.
Choose Folder and one will appear.
Then do the same for various apps that you want in the folder (on blank sections of screen) and then drag them into the folder to populate it.
When the folder is open - you can rename it by tapping in the top bar.

Or - you can use apps like Apps Organiser - which are more flexible in that you can choose nice icons for each folder - making them stand out more.
I have some nice ones for Games, Multimedia, tools etc.

Oh - and Ill also jump on the "I LOVE SWYPE" bandwagon.
I got into the beta and its awesome for quick emails and SMS. I still use the hardware keyboard on my Milestone for longer things though.

                    Other recommended apps are:
                    Android Agenda for calendar
                    Beautiful Widgets - weather/time - skinnable - but is a paid app.
                    Mario live wallpaper
Gameboid/SNESoid/Gensoid/PSX4Droid - emulators for Gameboy, SNES, Sega Genesis, PSOne - Console gaming in the palm of your hand.

                    Hey Andy -
Have you tried Brut Maps - a hacked version of Google maps that gives you full voice guided turn-by-turn nav in Australia?

I got an HTC Desire a few weeks back. Loving it. Couple of apps I recommend is Layar - best in built up areas - Google Sky Maps, and the Vignette app for the camera. Ive got a blog with photos from that, but I dont know if I can pimp it here. The weather radar is helpful too.

For all the HTC Desire users, Android 2.2 is now available from Telstra. I did the OTA update using the Wi-Fi at home. Took about 15 mins all up with no dramas. Just follow the instructions and dont be impatient.

Did this update last week - smooth as and well worthwhile.

Use the phone-based update feature as mentioned on the blog in the previous post and connect via Wifi. Backup your important data just in case.

I dont know about that, it might just be our IT dept, but weve never been able to get out crackberry handsets and servers to understand what daylight savings it. Makes it impossible to book or reschedule meetings using your handset. Mine has a habit of jumping from +10GMT to -12GMT too. Drives me crazy!

Is the HTC mozart one of the new windows handsets?
