Re: Android Phones
Id like to throw in a vote for Tapatalk. I do most of my social stuff on the iPad or phone and CS is a little tough on smaller screens. Not terrible, but not great. Tapatalk works awesomely well.

Re: Android Phones
Great Deal - I think it needs more data though.Originally posted by 2237253E3F33560 link=1281426344/93#93 date=1302684993Great deal on the Galaxy S at the moment - $0 on the $29 plan with Vodafone.
If youre after an Android smartphone, this deal would be hard to beat.
200Mb is pretty paltry - especially if you are wanting to actually use the power of the phone/Android.
Data add-on packs arent too much though.
And you do all your downloading on wifi.
Currently Im quite happy on my Milestone 1 - running Cyanogenmod 7 (Gingerbread 2.3.3), overclocked to 1GHz plus some memory tweaks.

Re: Android Phones
Im not quite at that stage, though not sure Ill invest the time for home-cooked ROMs. Much more time-efficient to just jump around the ROMs that others have baked. CyanogenMod 7 is working quite nicely for me (and probably the one Ive been most satisfied with actually - very nice to use)Originally posted by 5C7B7F70415C7B7F6C1E0 link=1281426344/88#88 date=1301891649Mmmm, home cooked ROM, are there RomSnobs yet. Are you just doing modifications on vanilla android or is it more serious?

Re: Android Phones
Yippee!
After much browsing of the web, I saw a link to some android tips on an email newsletter today, not much use in themselves as they rely on the Nexus one trackball. But by then trying a different google search I came across a Samsung tips page that tells me I can bring up a cursor keyboard on my swype keypad.
Press the swype key (the one with the i and a squiggle) and swipe to the SYM key next to it.
Voila, a whole new keypad with all the buttons needed to select and move around text.
That and the Dolphin HD browser with tabbed browsing and gesture input makes me a very happy chappy.
Now I just draw an R on the screen in my browser and I see all the recent coffeesnobs posts. 8-)
I also have a whole load more tips and user guide pages to read, no doubt Ill learn more about what Ive been missing over the last 6 months.
Course the phone currently crashes or hangs once a day, but thats life with prerelease s/w.

Im not really doing anything much. The rom kitchen is more like a restaurant where you choose a la carte items. Its over 20 years since I wrote any firmware myself.Originally posted by 082F2B2415082F2B384A0 link=1281426344/88#88 date=1301891649I knew Sony would take notice of that email I sent them ;D ;D

Seemed like a logical thing to do since I roast my own coffee already
It is convenient though to design your own blend of base rom, kernel, modem, launcher etc. One thing that has surprised me is how big a difference the modem choice can make to battery life.
If you want stability though, wait for official manufacturer releases

There are now many happy X10 users eagerly awaiting the new release, assuming their telco decides to approve it.

Sony have just announced that they changed their minds and WILL be going to 2.3! There are now many happy X10 users eagerly awaiting the new release, assuming their telco decides to approve it.Originally posted by 456266695845626675070 link=1281426344/84#84 date=1301637461I now have a Sony Ericsson X10, which is a great phone for less than $430, 4" screen, good 8Mp camera with HD (720p) video.
Sadly Sony have only just released 2.1 for this phone with no plans to go higher (they do seem to be sugesting that if you want a higher version of android you should Root the phone and install a custom ROM ).
Always used Swype and loved it until the time came when I could no longer highlight text and delete the annoying non-words that made their way into my dictionary! Being able to type one handed without looking at the phone is sooo useful at times.Originally posted by 456266695845626675070 link=1281426344/84#84 date=1301637461I didnt have this problem in 2.2.1, are you using Swype, if not give it a go, I think it may help (watch the tutorial on Swype) I think its the best thing since sliced bread.
I have since solved the problem thanks to the galaxy s users guide on Samsungs web site. After telling it to select text, then press and drag/swipe the portion of text to be highlighted, once correct text is highlighted to my satisfaction, then press and hold again and choose cut. I hadnt thought to drag across the text I wanted – just assumed that having chosen a start point I could then simply select the end point like I always did in the past.
Course I still miss the text entry box that filled the whole screen and was easier to read, but can live without it as the other features of 2.2 make life easier: lag free, working GPS, built in Navigon navigation, flash support, screen capture,...
Just started roasting my own ROMs at the romkitchen. Seemed like a logical thing to do since I roast my own coffee already ;D

Re: Android Phones
Although others, who have been using large screen touch based smart-phones with multi-tasking since 2003 (eg O2 XDA), see the iPhone as more an evolutionary consumerisation of the idea.Originally posted by 293C2E3534385D0 link=1281426344/79#79 date=1301557671To be fair, I think the first iPhone was pretty revolutionary

She works for Vodafone in Marketing.Originally posted by 6F7A6873727E1B0 link=1281426344/69#69 date=1301550597Ooh how? Theyre nice phones - made by Samsung, but because theyre Google branded - ultimately always the first to get Android updates.
They had a competition (something to do with gingerbread) and she won.
My son recently got the HTC.
Hes a geek, did a lot of research and thats the one chose.

Re: Android Phones
I had Android 2.2.1 on a LG Optimus P500, but the phone failed twice and they (a big yellow telco with small cute animals) had to give my money back. The ACCC did have to have a chat with this particular telco before they decided to give my money back, but thats another story.
When the phone worked it was good, and Android 2.2.1 seemed OK, I believe the phones failure was hardware related so I dont have any gripe with 2.2.1.
I now have a Sony Ericsson X10, which is a great phone for less than $430, 4" screen, good 8Mp camera with HD (720p) video.
Sadly Sony have only just released 2.1 for this phone with no plans to go higher (they do seem to be sugesting that if you want a higher version of android you should Root the phone and install a custom ROM

Sonys version of 2.1 includes some 2.2 features, and overall there is not much that 2.2 had that the X10 cant do, the only problem is not being able to run apps from SD card, thats not a problem for me but could be for some.

Re: Android Phones
Upgraded my galaxy S at the weekend to froyo 2.2 and ever since then Ive been having problems browsing.
Im now on 2.2.1 and it isnt any better.
Basically, the text entry box no longer appears when I am typing in web forums, so I cant see what I am typing and I cant highlight and cut text.
Anyone else seen this? It is probably a setting somewhere, but I cant find anything obvious and it makes browsing a real pain (one reason Ive been a bit quiet this week).
