Re: Coffee Snob Petrolheads?

Melbuurn I am so jealous! Id love to buy a HK Monaro. I was a petrolhead when younger - I rebuilt an FJ Holden back to original (it was a burnt out wreck). I loved it. A Jaguar MK II is next on my list...

A looong time ago, I was getting about in a LH Torana with a 350 Chev. Absolutely frightening handling, but you could pass anything anywhere...

These days, the better halfs WRX provides the thrills.

Re: Coffee Snob Petrolheads?

I used to have a two cylinder 2cv Citroen. The only thing it was capable of passing was a petrol station.

On a nice day, going home from work I would roll the canvas roof back. Unfortunately this usually meant getting stuck next to a "W" class tram full of school children going up a hill that I didnt have the power to pass.

When I got home the car would be full of empty drink cans and anything else the brats could lob in through the open roof.

I didnt open the roof much anymore.

Not long after I owned a very fast, modified Mini Cooper S. Back then this was the sort of car that qualified you as a petrol head.

In my younger days I used to be quite involved in rallying. Used to drive a heavily modified Datsun 1600. It had over 200hp and was very quick! Modifications are too numerous to list here, but was bored and stroked to around 2.2L, with twin 48mm Weber carbs, 11:1 compression ratio (ran on avgas), Bilstein suspension, 4 wheel ventilated disc brakes, etc, etc. Driving at 180km/h on a dirt forestry track, close to the trees, was certainly exhilarating!

I have many fond memories of those days, and would like to do it again one day, but now that I have other commitments (mortgage, married with a baby daughter, etc) I think its pretty unlikely Ill get to do it again.

I too see the link between coffee and nuts n bolts.

I am a qualified mechanic and while in my apprenticeship had a MK1 escort that dad and I done a ground up resto on, with his influence it was all done old school mini lites, twin webbers etc. it was no record breaker but it surprised people running 14sec ¼’s and under 2sec to 60 feet (really low ratio diff).

After I had my fun there I moved on to karting I raced a few different classes with the leopard lights the fastest class I raced, good for about 160km 15mm off the ground.

A couple of years ago I gave up full time nuts n bolts and fast things so I could come and work in the coffee industry roasting, I love it my hands are much cleaner and the missus prefers me coming home smelling of coffee rather than oil.

Now I’m on the lookout for another project I just have to decide old espresso machine or car?  8-)

We went to our local GM dealers trade night last night. The last "door prize" was to sit in Maurice Fabiettis 3400hp Monaro Top Doorslammer and "fire it up....... No I didnt win the prize but Mrs Mono did. She certainly got a buzz from the experience and Maurice is a nice and approachable guy.  Ive named her "Methanol Momma" for the time being...........

I watched the Top Gear guys the other night put the new Camaro up against a Mercedes and I mean, seriously...the Merc is a souless piece of sanitised German manufacturing, the Camaro is just pure American over the top brashness! Loved it!
I liked that top gear episode, but the Camaro is pretty much just a VE commo under the skin - it looks good and goes pretty well but I wouldnt have one on my shopping list.
It probably isnt a fair comparison with the Merc given the price difference, but I wouldnt call the E63 AMG "soulless" - those 6.2L V8 Mercs sound unbelievable.

My favourite past car was the Mini in my avatar - genuine 1969 mk2 Cooper S, 1275cc +.060, 290 deg cam, roller rockers, big-valve ported head, balanced, 45mm DCOE Weber - awesome car to drive. Should never have sold it but then everyone whos sold a Cooper S says that... that was 4 years ago...

Then bought an AU V8 Falcon and went a bit nuts on it - 347ci stroker, AFR185 alloy heads, from the airbox to the sump there were no unmodified components. Flat 13 quarter on injected-LPG.
Ive got quarter mile runs for both of those on youtube http://www.youtube.com/user/someblokefromwa

Dont have any interesting cars at the moment. Wife likes my coffee hobby more since she gets some benefit from it and its cheaper, but Ive got plans over the next couple of years to build a 65-66 Mustang or maybe an XR-XB Falcon if the budget cant stretch to a stang. plan is to go a mildly modified AU3 XR8 spec driveline (injected 302 Windsor / 5 speed) - should be fun...

Now that is.........well odd. Does look a little fun. agile little bugger. A mate had a jetboat with 2 2stroke 1100cc jetski engines. 5m long and 220hp. Full lock at full speed of 90km and it would do a 360 and stop with in seconds. Amazing agility.

It sure looks life fun, but Id miss the wind and spray.

In my youth I raced hydroplanes and played in and around boats all summer on a lake in Canada.

Im not a hot water boat man, Ive sailed small craft such as a Laser and Windsurfer. Plenty of action, wind, water and spray.

With sailing you dont fight against the elements. You use them in a way to get the best speed. On small boats in strong wind you are the ballast and have to be agile or you end up in the drink. Much fun.

Perhaps this will convert some people to boating.

40 kt top speed or around 75kmh not bad for wind and a 90ft boat

The worlds fastest sailboat flying along at over 95kph.

It is expected that this record will fall with-in the next year as this team has recently launched their next generation boat.
