Im a Bose supporter from waaayyy back in the 60s to early 70s when the only thing they manufactured was speakers and back then, they were a very high quality setup. Electro-Voice too are another favourite (for speakers only that is).

I like the look (and sound) of that Aktimate Maxi System too. Should produce pretty decent sound within a smallish, reflective environment. Dont know about the iPod facility though...... : :P

If powered speakers are an option (no amplifier needed) then do look at (OK, OK, listen to) the Audio Engine speakers. They do have direct connections for MP3 players, and the new iPod Nano comes with an FM radio. You could also stream internet radio from the computer wirelessly via a Airport Express. Both the A2 and A5 get very good reviews.

I have a pair of their small A2 speakers that provide sound for the computer room, and although they wont go as loud or as deep as my main system, they sound remarkably similar in tone and provide a very satisfying listen. I compared them to the Bose (I have had a set of Bose 901s) and prefer the A2s.

They also cost less than 5% of the cost of my main amp/speaker combo!

My situation is very similar to yours Greg.....

Our main Hi-Fi system is probably worth half the value of our current abode but for the last couple of years, its probably only been switched on twice, maybe three times. Have got a great little compact Altec Lansing system connected to the PC in the study and thats where I do most of my listening these days.

From where I started as a Hi-Fi hardware nerd a few decades ago, whod a thought... : ;D

              Yeah....

$1,500 would nearly buy one of my Tonearms at a rough guess. All of this stuff was bought over many years, back when we had some spare disposable income (as they say). Almost all of it is still packed away in storage in their original boxes - yeah, I know.... Who does that anymore : ;D ;D

I had the finger lift gold plated and the knife bearing re-made in brass and gold plated

I really like to listen to Vinyl records   ;D

And B/4 anyone says something I will get in first

                  Its not "OVER THE TOP"!!--its just *adequate*  ;D ;D ;D ;D

Although I do stream most of my music to the DAC and then the stereo through an Airport Express.  Without a transport the DAC sounds almost as good as vinyl, and does allow me to play music that is less than 10 years old (the last time vinyl was readily available to me without totally extravagant support for AusPost).

                    Re: What music system?

Good to see theres some music lovers on here as well as coffee heads
l have a nice system too ( modded kt88 valve amp, Open Baffle speakers etc ) ....also have a dedicated HT room with kit speakers , DIY Infinite Baffle Subwoofer setup , projector etc , so my suggestion is like others....forget cds ( l have to get around to this myself yet) run hi res off a laptop through say a Maverick tube dac and then amp and speakers.

On your budget ld go a good 2nd hand amp and speakers....you can find nice stuff on this forum ( and an overload of info )

Good luck with your quest !

                        Re: What music system?

                        An update:

I decided to buy the Aktimate Maxi system last Saturday and on the way back to the shop, purchased a 160gb ipod as my Zen Creative loses charge very quickly these days.

Setup the system and plugged in the ipod, the Apple icon appeared, then the screen promptly went black! Ut oh, thats not good.  Maybe it just needs charging?  So I took the ipod home, plugged it into our pc...and nothing.  Tried Apples recovery sequence many times over and again nothing...it was dead.

Sue suggested I try her ipod so I checked to make sure it was working properly, plugged it into the Aktimate, and it died too!!!

Ironically, I plugged in the Creative using a different port and the system worked  and sounded wonderful.

Called the store on Monday morning and the Aktimate rep called back that afternoon then came to pick up the system on Tuesday afternoon to take it away for testing.

He called this morning to confirm that the system hadnt been wired correctly and had been responsible for killing the ipods.

Hes coming back today with two new ipods and a new system.

At last... a true ipod killer ;D

How unlucky, Im sure the replacement will be fine. At the very least, thats a great example of customer service.

The Aktimate rep could not have been more helpful, and I believe him when he told me it was the first instance they had seen of this nature.

While what happened was unfortunate, Im delighted with the outcome. The sound from these speakers is fantastic.

As for the after sales support, Ive rarely come across such excellent service and will be recommending Aktimate to anyone who cares to listen (pun intended)!

I on the other hand am looking seriously into a DAC as vinyl records are hard to get in a suitable condition
