  • Avalon Air Show 2011

Roasting today under the flight path of the Avalon Air Show...

I have to say its pretty distracting and I keep running outside with my head cocked back.

"Ohhh a big long pointy delta wing with a T tail", "Ahhh, a pair of short pointy nimble ones doing loopy stuff" etc etc
I really need a copy of "what plane is that?" on hand.

They all sound amazing, big bold tough and a ton of noise to carry one person.

Love air shows, with all the noise, smoke, speed and smells. They put a pretty decent one on up here at Amberley every now and then too. Always try to get there when they do.... 8-)

I obviously needed to send Pete down there to Plane Spot for you...except he was up here kiddie wrangling while I socialised with Bris-Vegas Snobbers, sorry!

Call me tragic, but I really, really love living next to an Air Force Base and watching jets fly over all the time. Ill never get over the smell of Av-Tur and the deep, deep rumble of the jets taking off - sends a shiver up my spine no matter how many times I hear/smell it! =)

I suspect you are both talking about Amberley...

I have fond memories of pulling up at the Willowbank caravan park a dozen years ago very late at night after driving 22 hours from Victoria. Paula and I pitched the 3 man tent and went to sleep. 7am wake-up call was 3 x F111s shaking the ground and the sky like an earthquake and thunder, I shot out of the sleeping bag with eyes the size of dinner plates... they could have warned us!

Window? I nearly tore through the zip on the tent.

Cool. How long a trip is that in a wee sized plane?

                    Re: Avalon Air Show 2011

I tend to avoid air shows these days.

Not because i dont like planes. I love them. Thats the problem.

Please bear with me. I dont expect most to understand me, but a few may have experienced what i have so.
Passenger jets dont have the effect, but when i hear and feel a F-18 or F-111 scream past, i get this hair standing on every part of my body and get this sensation of primevel man pounding in my heart that screams "come and get me!! Im right here and ready to fight!! If i do get in the cockpit, nothing is going to stop me!!"
I get this feeling too when i see a thunderstorm looming closer and closer with lightning and ground shaking thunder getting louder.
Just something inside of me thats spiritually painful that wants to break free.
I get very restless at that stage. I just want to shout aloud, but thankfully i am able to be in control of myself.

Im sure some of you can relate to that.
I love planes, but it hurts to see them strangely enough when theyre close and thunderously loud.

                      Re: Avalon Air Show 2011

The closest I got to Avalon this year was the cap that one of my swimming squad members brought back for me. He was also busting to tell me all about his time down there and what he saw. Cant wait to see all 500 of his photos!

We never made an airshow down there because its always been in the middle of the flying season here. I used to get the pamphlets in the mail and have to sadly drop them in the bin!
