Re: solar cooking
I would compare it with a gas burner on a stove you can control the heat by covering part of the mirror or adjusting the hight of the potholder so it is not so close to the focus of the parabola. Clouds also make a difference :-[ the last few weekends seem to have been gray here and with uni exams and essays free tome to play has been at a minimum.
the box type cooker seem a good replacement for a slow cooker but I have never used one of these. perhaps this can be a post uni degree project.

Re: solar cooking
Can you grill on it or is it just for pots of food like soup? Ive seen them on TV before in a reality show and it seemed interesting. Is there a way to control the heat output? For instance can you shield or remove some of the reflector panels to reduce the heat?

Re: solar cooking
Very cool, or is that "hot stuff" Petanque.
Now you need a bread maker with a hole in the side/bottom for the worlds first direct solar powered Corretto.
Thought I could see something shiny just to the west of me

Re: solar cooking
Adelaide in summer has a solar isolation of about 1000w per square meter the dish has a area of 1.7 square meters.
the 5 liters of soup in the stock pot was boiling quite rapidly
I was thinking of a wok and lots of stirring.

Re: solar cooking
I guess this would be probably the 1.5m, the same as petanque purchased? I saw a 1.8m option, which would be a bit of a beast size wise, but might get you up to around 1200WOriginally posted by 537C766B120 link=1303814822/7#7 date=1304039602The ones that Ive seen are quoted at about 800watts

If you dont Ill buy one and do it.Originally posted by 444F4E7F4E4149524E200 link=1303814822/6#6 date=1304008903I am tempted to try roasting coffee in it.

The ones that Ive seen are quoted at about 800watts (I assume at the equator) which might be a bit low for anything over 50g of beans in southern Oz.
You would have to make a solar rotating drum too for maximum effect.

Re: solar cooking
It is 1.5 m diameter the cooker weighs about 17 Kg by my first few cooking experiences in Adelaide on a clear April day I could have managed with a 1.2 m diameter cooker.
I dont know how the performance would degrade over time.
I am tempted to try roasting coffee in it.

Re: solar cooking
What diameter did you go for? It must have been a heavy package with all that steel. Let us know how your first cooking goes.

Re: solar cooking
I saw similar ones in Tibet. They were everywhere there. Can you tell us where you got it?
