  • Wifi activatable power boards.

    Hi-howdy,

For some time I have been interested in acquiring a power board that can be activated via the internet.

The benefit is obvious - heading home from X? Tap your smart phone and your coffee machine switches on. Then you can have that latte before bed that you normally miss out on - or the double espresso before you rush off to Y.

The problem is cost; I havent been able to find anything cheap and nasty (affordable), which for me right now is under $100. Normally Id google away until convinced that my dream lies on the other side of an unexpected pay rise, but when it comes to coffee ... coffeesnobs IS google.

    Anyone in the know?

I guess it depends on how much you want to DIY: http://www.jaycar.com.au/productResults.asp?keywords=kv3595&keyform=KEYWORD &SUBMIT.x=0&SUBMIT.y=0

That board would do it for you if you wanted to mount it in a nice box.

I must be living in the slow lane but the Gaggia only takes about 2 minutes to warm up.

Hmmm, thank you for the idea. A few things I could use that for. I probably wont though to be honest. I just spent a few weeks with problems all because of my home-made ethernet cables...

Come now, lets be helpful. Petanque have a look at the second reply in this thread: http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1213939928

Basically all coffee machines really need 40 minutes or so of heating up in order to produce a quality shot.

            Hey Frysk

There is a remote power outlet switch that activates by calling it up on your phone. It requires a SIM card and is rated from 110v~220v so may be able to be pushed to 240v. You might want to check out the wattage rating on the switch before hooking it up to your machine though.

Look for it on the bay of evils using Cellphone GSM Remote Control Switch as your search string

            Cheers

Sticking to jaycar $200 - this requires plug adaptors too which are $10 each. No way to get down to your budget for an IP power soloution that isnt an electrical hazard.

I use both solutions that have been shown. The first is more suited to 12v situations for safety reasons, but the one I have linked to is superb for remote power operation and has many other useful features (it will keep your dyndns updated and also act as a timer switch for example).

Look into home automation, might as well setup everything.

You can get modules that are RF controlled and then you have one that connects to the computer. I have the gear but havent had the time to set it up.

End result will be that I can turn on anything in the house remotely as long as I have a data connection.
