    Re: Internet Speed.

Im about 3.5 K from the exchange so thats about the best I get in this area until the NBN is rolled out. Maybe I could move into the snobbery until then.

No work, just play and quality control on the beans...

          Re: Internet Speed.

I edited your post to fix your image Gary. All you needed was to wrap the URL in the IMG tag like:

          Code:
          [img]http://www.speedtest.net/result/1376020488.png[/img]
I just tried it again at 11am and its pretty good still. The ping is way faster into Melbourne but the download speed dropped off a little.

                you bet

mines generally too slow for unbuffered iView and youtube
still better than the Satellite service I had a coupleof years ago in Clare Valley. Before that dial-up and we used to make jokes about how many coffees could make and consume whilst uploading/downloading email that is including dropouts and redials to the nearest POP which was 85kms away  :  :-?

                Bring on the NBN [smiley=2vrolijk_08.gif]

                  Re: Internet Speed.

Fibre optic is already layed in my street. It will be getting connected to my house in the next month - which is when they are expecting to turn on the NBN to my neighbourhood - cant wait! (I live in one of the first roll-out trial areas).
Still havent seen how much the plans are going to be though. Any snobs got the NBN in their neighbourhood yet? - if so what do plans begin at?

Thanks. I was scratching my head at 12.30am odd wondering how to do it.

I think were all generally thankful were well away from dial-up speeds.

Off topic. I have a question about NBN. When it does come into play, do we have to inform the ISP to make use of the NBN and perhaps pay a bit more over the top of current subscription, or do we sit tight and enjoy the benefits?

                      Re: Internet Speed.

With the NBN, according to my ISP, they install a NTU which needs to be cabled to your (probably) new router. Then you need to switch plans. Currently, they seem to be about twice the price for half the data allowance (from my ISP). That is for a 25/5 Mbps connection.

Looks like I might just stay with what Ive got until they start discounting...

You need to sign up to a new plan - one that is fibre optic not ADSL. Im signed up for another year yet on my ADSL plan, but I am allowed to upgrade my plan (that is, as long as the plan I am changing to costs the same or more than the one I am on, then it is no problem to change over to it at anytime). Luckily, the company are offering fibre optic plans in my neighbourhood so I will be looking at changing over to fibre optic as soon as I practically can.

Ah that’s a bit better, I have erased the provider name as I am at work.

Silly thing is that I dont actually notice much difference between speeds at work and at home

hey pavoniboy what prices are NBN in your area

found this link for http://www.internode.on.net/residential/fibre_to_the_home/nbn_plans/nbn_first_release/ internode pricing for 1st stage Tas  and also mainland including the gong.  Seems as though Node has connected first (trial) customer in Willunga SA.

The main problem for rurals will be whether we are pushed to satellite instead of fibre or even fixed wireless "The fixed-wireless network and NBN Cos long-term satellite service are designed to offer speeds of 12Mbps* to retail service providers to offer to people living in approximately seven per cent of premises not covered by fibre". from the NBN website

aah ha the *The speeds actually experienced by end-users will depend on a number of factors including the retail broadband plan they choose, the number of simultaneous users on the service, their equipment and their in-premises connection.   :-?

Gee BB lucky you I would notice  compared to my ADSL home office service your speeds are:
Downloads more than 200 times faster, Uploads around 300 times faster   :P
