Finding Nemo was a Pixar and Walt Disney movie, so, not sure it could be claimed as Aussie apart from location and a few voice overs. However Happy Feet could probably be claimed as an Aussie film, considering it was a Kennedy Miller production. Though it was still probably bankrolled by overseas finance too.

Shine with geoffrey rush has to be in there along with dirty deeds as quite entertaining. Finding nemo was australian too wasnt it? Not saying I am putting my vote there but the box office certainly thinks so.

I had thought that The Piano was an NZ film but then I saw it on a list of Aussie films. http://www.film.org.au/feature_allfilms.htm

    See Piano 1993.

The Piano has been happily claimed as an Australian film and as a New Zealand film. (The French have thankfully resisted the temptation, even though it was paid for by French francs.) So what nationality is it? Does it matter?

It was presented at Cannes as an Australian film, especially when it won the Palme d’Or.

And of course it matters in the gathering of Australian Film Institute Awards, which it did.

Director Jane Campion is a New Zealander as is star, Sam Neil; the film is set and shot in New Zealand.

The producer is Australian, as is the writer and editor, and it was developed in Australia. Post production was completed in Australia. The composer is English and the finance French.

    The Piano.

That would probably be on a list of NZ movies

I agree with Di that Breaker Morant and the Chant of Jimmy Blacksmith are worth a guernsey and with Scoota about Priscilla, Strictly Ballroom, Lantana, Crocodile Dundee and The Piano.

Many great Aussie films fail at the box office because their promotion cannot compete with Yankee blockbusters released at the same time.

Here are what I think are some more great Aussie films from the past: Jedda, Smiley, The Shiralee, The Sundowners, Theyre a Weird Mob, Alvin Purple, Don Quixote, The Fourth Wish, The Picture Show Man and Oyster Farmer.

Some may have been before your time; however they may pop up on TV or DVD from time to time.

Most of the omissions I would have called have been covered already.....Stone, Romper Stomper, The castke, MMax 1, Sunday Too Far Away, Odd Angry Shot et al

I have to admit to my shame though.....I did fork out good money to go and see Welcome to Woop Woop at the big screen. Myself and the four other people there etc etc ...really, really bad movie saved in part at the time only by Suzie Porter and the Barry Humphries cameo ;D

Seems like the author probably hasnt seen a great deal of Australian films after all!
I would guess he has seen anything we can mention at least once.. but obviously didnt rate them as high for whatever reason.  He is actually a very good reviewer and tells it how it is without too much ego like some others in the printed press do.
Would be interesting to hear his reasoning behind his list, Andy. Did he give one?

Standing round the campfire, surrounded by horses from the movie!
I would take a punt that was Jack Lovicks place.  tis funny the things we dont know about our friends sometimes.
I guess I havent really talked a lot about old history...sometimes, you do just think that friends youve been around a long time just know stuff about you. Must remember its not always the case! Remind me to tell you the whole story some time, there are quite a few from that weekend! Yes, youre quite correct, it was on the Lovicks ride where a lot of the country travelled was state forest as well as the Lovicks property. I have always wanted to get back there, this time with the 4wd and camper!

Stone... still found it a bit...odd
Maybe "a bit odd" also describes those that still like it too?
    ;D
;D Then that would describe Mark to a T then! It was his fave film after all! (well, that and Top Gun!) ;D

    No Crocodile Dundee either
The front page of the newspaper had the banner ad for this artice and showed Dundee on one side and Max on the other... yet Dundee didnt get a gong.

Re: The Best and Worst Aussie Movies

Having grown up in and around the Australian film industry, thanks to my mum being a freelance film and tv make up artist, as well as a founder of the Make Up Artists Guild of Aust...I have always felt a close attachment to a lot of Aussie films, especially the ones my mum got to work on.

I was a bit surprised to see that Picnic at Hanging Rock did not make that list. Surely, it was one of Peter Weirs career defining films!? Either that one or The Year of Living Dangerously (which Im sure had an Oscar nomination or two.)

So...no one thought that Charlie and Boots should make the list? I actually love this film.

No Crocodile Dundee either? It sure had moments in it that are still being quoted in day to day life! Well, at least it can rest on the laurels of being Australias highest grossing film.

I agree too with the Man from Snowy River, this is my all time favourite movie...to the point where we spent a long weekend riding the high country on horses, visiting many of the movie locations. (and incidently where my husband and I announced our engagement! Standing round the campfire, surrounded by horses from the movie! Yep, it was romantic!)

Breaker Morant not making that list was a surprise. I also love the Lighthorsemen as well as Phar Lap (my mum worked on that movie).

I know the Castle has had a mention but what about The Dish? Love this movie as well, even if it took a little bit of licence with what actually happened in regards to Australia being involved with the first moon walk. Never let the truth get in the way of a good story however!

Who mentioned the Big Steal? What a classic...can never forget that name of Gordon Farkas...seriously, its enough to have me giggling silly even now!

There is a copy of Stone in this household too but it was well before my time and having seen it as an adult, still found it a bit...odd.

Priscilla, Queen of the Desert didnt make the list either? Strictly Ballroom? Lantana? The Piano?

Seems like the author probably hasnt seen a great deal of Australian films after all!

Nice to see a few "Stone" fans. I had a mate with a Z9 and he used to do the trick where you pull on the front picks and stand the bike up in the air.

He stopped doing it after losing a fair bit of bark off his face from showing off...

Re: The Best and Worst Aussie Movies

Stone is definitely one of my favourites, and I actually had posession (on loan) of a Z9 for a few years while a family member worked overseas. A few men would look twice when they realised it was a girl riding it  ;D Thank god I never dropped the thing because Id never have been able to pick it up again.

Sunday Too Far Away is also one of the best Aussie movies ever made, especially that clothes washing scene of Jack thompsons very nice bare bottom  The opening scene definitely catches your attention.

Bean Bear, I have to disagree about The Cars That Ate Paris. Brilliant movie, and very much a cult film.

I still believe Storm Boy is the most beautifully shot film ever made in Australia. As a South Australian who has spent most of my childhood on the Coorong, I believe Geoff Burton really captured the amazing beauty of the Coorong.

The Odd Angry Shot is also a great one as well as all others like Picnic at Hanging Rock, Breaker morant and so many others its really toohard to choose a top twenty.
