Indeed! I saw the movie/documentary that clip is from and they spent a day getting towed into one monster wave after another. The weird thing about it was they were hundreds of miles from land out on the open ocean! I think it was off the coast of Baja California where they were where theres an underwater sea mount that shoots up from the depths to almost surface level. In the right weather/sea conditions 10 foot rollers suddenly turn into these massive walls of water that some have estimated to be as high as 120 feet! Bloody freaking amazing watching them surf em!

        WOOW dude!!

Hey Flynn. I played that clip through the Playstation 3 browser into the hi fi system, and i must say, the rumble through the woofers of the Bowers and Wilkins Matrix 3s gave me the erectile hairs on my neck.

And that guy stayed up all the way through that!
        Yeah!

I think the movie is called Billabong Odyssey. According to one comment this is Jaws in Hawaii.

I think he got cleaned up by the white water right near the end but, admit it Gary, you just wanted an excuse to skite about your B&Ws  Not that I wouldnt mind a pair of my own.

With the advent of Youtube, we are lucky to be able to view this sort of thing. In my surfing days of the 70s I used to read about guys who would specialise in big wave surfing and there was talk even then of someone riding a 100-footer but there would have been few witnesses to verify it.  That was in the days before tow-ins as well.

Like fishing stories, wave height is somewhat subjective. I was never brave enough get into big waves. If you are about to try to paddle over a 3m wave, looking up at that lip from the bottom - it may as well be 100 foot.

It would either be that or Riding Giants which was made in 2004 and I think pre-dates that video.

Glad to give you something to do. I imagine the surf in Minnesota would be a bit flat at the moment (though would Lake Superior be big enough to hold a bit of a swell in windy times)

Well your clip is certainly from that movie. In fact its the opening clip of it.

Now to watch the whole thing and see what they say about it later in!

That rings a bell. Ill have to dig that one up as I remember the movie as having some just incredible waves/rides.

LOL Yeah we have nothing here that even comes close to those monster. There are however some actual surfable waves in the Great Lakes with even a few respectable ones in the right conditions. Awfully cold water though! Soon to be very cold ice! with the lakes to be taken over by the ice sailors!
                : ;D

It was indeed a wave at Jaws. It is Mike Parsons on his last wave of the day at the first Worlds Tow-in Championships held at Jaws Hawaii in 2002. He scored a perfect 10 on that ride. While they didnt address the height of that wave specifically  the commentary said the waves hit 50-60 feet that day. Freaking awesome wave and ride!

The monster waves I was thinking about are the ones found at the Cortes Bank 115 miles off the Southern California coast. The film I was trying to remember was Step into Liquid which filmed Mike Parsons riding a wave with a 70 foot face which won him the award for the largest wave ridden in the northern hemisphere in 2001/2002.

                    Wow, just wow!

Well if car racing accidents or punchups during the footy are things that float your boat, then the surfing equivalent is...the horrendous wipeout
