Arcade, some users complained about the name....I don't personally find it offensive (I don't find many things offensive....certainly not usernames) but it is quite lame....the guy was asked to change it, but rather than doing so went into pompous undergraduate mode. There was no great social purpose being served by the username. It's pretty simple, the site owners can set whatever rules they like, and if they don't appeal to people then there's a whole world of other sites to visit.

Are you being deliberately obtuse? You honestly don't see how CremaMyPants as a username could possibly be controversial????Originally posted by Arcade View PostBarry - I agree with what you're saying, if I were asked you would get no argument from me to change. I was just surprised that the name was controversial, that's all.
I've been there, done that, got the t-shirt, set the t-shirt on fire and then moved on and could not be offended by a silly name in the slightest. However, I can certainly see how it could possibly offend others and, as this is a public forum, I defer to the greater common good and wholeheartedly support Andy's actions in this regard. After all, the username in question would definitely NOT be allowed as a personalised license plate, so why should it be allowed here?
Lastly, while the name didn't offend me, I was annoyed by how the user thought that Coffeesnobs was the appropriate forum for his juvenile, sophomoric sense of humour.

Agreed.Originally posted by Dimal View PostAs has been raised on several occasions over the years, this is a Family Forum with active members from both genders and ages ranging from pre-teens to near the ton. Why someone feels the need to advertise their lack of maturity and ignorance via the choice of such a dim-witted nickname really only goes to support why Andy questioned it in the first place.
We don't really need this sort of "player" in our midst...
Mal.
We seem to be getting more than our fair share of that (and dim-witted juvenile behaviour) these days.... ....who seem to be hell bent on debating everything other than coffee...
How about we leave this thread (lock down time mods?) and get back to some intelligent, meaningful discussion about coffee. Maybe we'd all gain something of actual worth then...

As you say Arcade, opinions were asked for and you gave yours. Talk Coffee then gave his opinion. He did not object to you giving your opinion. Nor did he make any personal comment either about or directed at you. He merely stated his opinion. All exactly as it should be.Originally posted by Arcade View PostOur opinions were asked for and I gave mine. Disparaging personal remarks removed by Mods.
Unfortunately at this point instead of continuing to discuss/debate the thread topic you reply with insults and disparaging personal remarks.
In this discussion you are the one who comes across as having problems with people who have opinions different than yours.

Not offended, but demeaned! I'm glad this forum has standards and hope that Andy and the Mods will continue that tradition. This site has grown from have a membership akin to a small town to something approaching a regional city is less than a decade. There's a reason for that.
Best wishes, Russell

Just read through this thread again and it caused me to reflect on a couple of things.
There's a different response to authority today to what existed in my youth.
Today many people, particularly young people, question decisions that affect them whereas in my youth we were more likely to just accept it.
Questioning is good of course, but only IF it is done in an intelligent (rational) and courteous way.
Unfortunately that rarely seems to be the case.
Lack of courtesy often seems to be accompanied by lack of common sense. If you are in a low-power or nil-power position you need to mind your manners, a principle not understood by some.
It's a brave new world...
