If there ever is a second coming odds are it will happen in America, probably somewhere in the mid west or California

I don't know about it being more likely in the good 'ol US of A.
We are so "Americanised" these days that just about any of the social or cultural values we used to disparagingly apply to the US are now equally applicable to Australia.
It's been obvious for decades that the diet of US culture via movies and TV has eaten away any distinctive Australian 'character', at least in anyone under 50 years of age.
I reside in a particularly red neck/bogan region where every second kid is called "Shennae", "Dakoda" or "MavRick" and where 'virgin births' are not unheard of to the local medical fraternity.
I keep thinking of that great film "Idiocracy".

I'm going to throw a "shrimp on the barbie" to prove you wrong...

            Naaa, I don't think so...

My 16 yo son is currently in the USA- actually in LA and was on Sunset Blvd earlier today. He's been over there with the Boomerangs Junior Varsity Boys Basketball Tour for the last three weeks or so.
He has said several times now how 'different' it is to what he was expecting...
And how glad he is to 'not' being an American... And how grateful he is to be an 'Aussie'....
            That's my boy....

Damn. I knew there was something wrong with throwing a Barbie on the BBQ.

Well, one virgin birth is a little hard to believe. But if there are that many reports, they must be true.

I hope that was in an encrypted email and not on a phone or clear text - Homeland Security will have him if they find out he's not all gungho about being an American...

I think the most telling stat in the OP is how many of them were on chastity pledges - virgin birth is the only way out of THAT situation...

I was watching one of my favourite shows recently (Anthony Bordain: No Reservations) where Anthony starts off his food tour of Australia with the comment that the "Shrimp on the Barbie" line has to be one of the worst tourist promotions of all time.
He goes on to party with (among others) Matt Preston (who seems less of a jerk than on that cooking show) and to state that Australian food and preparation is among the very best in the world.

Ol Grumpy - I would like to think that there are a lot more like your boy who have no desire to be American clones but unfortunately I seem to meet a lot of the others.

Well that promo is now 30 years old and pretty much an anachronism.

The Lara Bingle "Where the bloody hell are ya" ad is easily the worst.

Yeah, yeah, I get where you're coming from and I'm not disagreeing with your observation, you're quite right, at one level. However, what I see is that the kids certainly 'go play in that sandpit'.... And as they say, "When in Rome", blah, blah...
There's no doubt they immerse themselves into that culture, amongst others...

BUT, what I also see is that whilst that *is* what they are doing, it does not define 'who they are'...

I saw the Hogan shrimp on the barbie ad as very successful, dated now but in its day it worked.

Not sure what it had to do with virgin births though?

"I reside in a particularly red neck/bogan region where every second kid is called "Shennae", "Dakoda" or "MavRick" and where 'virgin births' are not unheard of to the local medical fraternity."
Will contemplate a pilgrimage to Warwick Rocky.
