  • Beer with a hint of coffee

I've just discovered Holgate Temptress, a micro-brewed beer from Woodend in Vic, which is a really dark beer with strong hints of chocolate and coffee. If you like both your beer and coffee to be dark, I reckon you should give it a go.

It's not that easy to get. I discovered it in a restaurant in Sydney (Rockpool), and then picked up some bottles from the brewery yesterday, but I don't believe it's sold at Dan's.

You can get it sometimes at Mrs Parmas in Little Bourke St (top end near Spring St) - they had another one as well that I can't recall the name of - it was like an espresso in a smooth dark beer that wasn't a stout - just pure yumminess in a glass.

That's sounding like my kind of beer. I am salivating just at the thought of it. Next time in Sydney maybe.

Check their website, they list all the bottle shops that stock their beer, there might be one near you.

Some of the stronger 'porter' style beers have a coffee flavour....... and if you like darker beers are a fantastic choice

Yesterday I had a porter from 4 Pines, a manly brewery. It was fantastic, very chocolatey.

There is a bottle shop close to me here in Sydney that has over 650 beers online and in their shop. They have the Holgate Temptress Chocolate Porter. I haven’t sampled it yet but I will.

I quote them. “Just as the name suggests this is a very tempting beer! This is a classic robust porter brewed with over 300 kg of malt and infused with a dash of rich Dutch cocoa and whole vanilla beans. Luscious chocolate, coffee, and caramel flavours are balanced by a hint of vanilla and a body of 6% alcohol. A perfect winter warmer or a complement to homemade meat pies and chocolate-based desserts.
A definite “unisex” beer with great appeal for both guys and gals.”
